Check for loose or missing screws on the bottom of the case, they can cause battery errors.
Also have you tried the battery in both the battery bay and the floppy/cd bay. if it only works in 1 bay then you have a bad system board.

Hello,
I have a similar problem now...

Although I thought that I really had any hard problem a Latitude user could have, I got a new one on top now:
Up to now I never had battery problems with my two CPiA366XT machines but lately one of them turned off repeatedly when using it without AC adaptor. For systray.exe doesn't work on both W98SE systems (causes crashes after having used any PCMCIA card) and had to be disabled I cannot see whether the AC adaptor works or not (and if it does, whether the battery is charged or not). So I used FN + F3 yesterday to look that up in the BIOS and saw that my second (right bay) battery was not detected any longer although both batteries were installed. I lifted the laptop and tried again and none of the batteries was detected any more.

All of my 4 batteries are detected in the other laptop, none is detected in the right bay of the one I'm having the problem with, and in the left bay batteries are detected sometimes and sometimes they are not (sometimes I can "toggle" by pressing against the bottom case below the left battery). So I found the reason my laptop turns off all the time even with two batteries installed.

I already disassembled both machines that often, that I can't tell (will be about 25 times now) and I can say every single screw is OK - so is it really the system board? Can anybody please tell me what device on that board I have to repair/change? This is my second system board already for I already had that very common "won't power up" problem and never got the help to fix that.
Please don't tell me this is the second defect making it necessary to buy a new mainboard?!...

Thank you very much!

Hi and thank you,
you don't know where exactly that loose contact usually is?

I don't have any spare boards, so had to buy them. And for I already had to change one expensive board I would prefer to fix the exact problem instead of throwing a hole board away. As it was with the "power up" problem:
Sometimes it works and sometimes not (and it can be influenced by touching the bottom of the case underneath the battery), so I hope the damage is not too big yet.

Thanks, Michael

MicMENS

on the CPI-A there are two boards that make up the system board The video Card and the mainboard (which houses the cpu and memory)   I would (if you have the resources) is change out the video card first, since this board has most of the dc/dc power circuity on it.  If that does not fix your problem then it might be the main board!

its not usually a loose contact.  what i have found is if you look underneath the keyboard on the metal backing sometimes there is a burn mark there then line it up and find the burned component on the motherboard then that will be the board that you will be replacing!  make sure you match part numbers because there are different video cards that all looks the same!

I have a Latitude CPi A.  I need to replace the HD in it.  I can boot up to the BIOS and a Win 95/98 floppy disk.  Lately the battery indicator shows the battery is not charged (yellow flashing).  Although the Bios shows 100% and the battery it self indicates it is charged.  However when I unplug the AC the unit powers off?  If I gently insert the battery it will indicate the battery is good (green flasing) for a few seconds. What could be the problem??

Hi,
I'm still waiting for a solution...

I can use my CPi only with power supply or using it on a flat surface without lifting/moving it (and even this only with the left of the two batteries):
When I lift the machine I can toggle between "installed" and "not installed" by touching the bottom case with one finger more ore less (about the place where the battery connector is: pushing is "installed", releasing is "not installed").

I already had to replace the mainboard once because nobody told me how to really fix that common "flickering lights but no boot" problem, so I don't want to replace it one more time again now!
Please tell me where to find the cause - I think it is the same one as for all the other people with the same problem?

Thanks a lot!
