BIOS and Windows XP fail to recognize memory
My Inspiron 5100 has been receiving a system error for about the past 4 months stating that the BIOS is not fully compatible with ACPI. This only occurs when the system recovers from hibernation. I thought the problem would be resolved by the updated BIOS so I upgraded to the newest version (A32) but the problem persists. Also, after updating the BIOS I began receiving a message that the system memory had changed during startup. I realize now that neither the BIOS nor the Windows XP Home operating system are recognizing the 512 MB (2x256 MB) that is connected to the DIMM slots. After playing with the memory card configurations, it appears that my computer is failing to recognize the memory cards in the DIMM A slot. The computer has worked great for the first two years prior to this point so I really hope to overcome this issue and get at least a couple more years out of my machine. Any insight or suggestions as to what the problem might be and how I might fix it would be greatly appreciated.

A suggested workaround was to utilise the only working RAM slot by putting in a bigger stick of RAM to make up for the loss of the other slot.

As of my knowledge, the 5100 has no known memory-slot problems. And i dont think that he upgrade of BIOS has affected the computer hardware.
What you need to do is to call in to the support, check if the computer has warranty.
Do the troubleshoting with a tech, and they will probably come to the conclusion that its the motherboard that need a change.
If you have the regular warranty it will take 10 working days to get your computer repaired.
The ACPI controller is a thingy that controlls power to different parts in your computer, when going back from hibernation this may occur. Most likely the motherboard change will solve this to.
