BIOS/DST test showing error 1000-0141 error
Computer was having random hard drive failures. I would leave the computer on overnight (running Windows XP) and check in the morning and would get message, missing boot device, etc. F1 to try again or F2 to run setup type messages.
Have flashed the bios to the latest (A13 I think), tried with two different drives, clean installed Windows on both and computer started to work again (for a week or so) and now same errors. Power on the computer now and it never boots to the drive, the bios doesn't see the hard drive *or* the Cd-rom attached. Sounds like the IDE controller is toast. Any other suggestions to try or can anyone tell me what it would cost to get the machine repaired?
Forgot to add that the computer is a Latitude C840 w/512mb of ram, 60gb hd.

Simple the hard drive is failing. Replace it.
The HDD and the CD drive are on the same IDE channel. IF either of those drives fail the system will not see the other drive. Remove the HDD and see if you can boot the system from a bootable CD-ROM disk. If you can then the HHD is dead or dying.
