Ok, try placing your windows vista disc, into the disc drive and hold down F2 whilst switching on your computer, try then booting from disc and see how it goes.
I assume you have got up to date antivirus and this isn't a virus on your harddrive, however you may need to reformat the harddrive and reinstall windows but try the repair method first.
Thank you for trying to help, but dell has got back to me and due to a fault in the hard drive they will replace the whole system - which is terrific!!

Do you get a black screen after BIOs loads up, during windows, before windows?
What version of windows are you running?
