Did you install the Dell drivers?  or are you using native support in Windows XP?  Make sure you bios is at least A12 with SP2, otherwise you will run into problems.  Once the bios is update, the native support in Windows XP should work fine, it not try installing the Dell drivers..

Thanks for the info - looks like I might have resolved the situation by installing Dell driver file R82522.exe

I was also advised to install BIOS update D400_A07.exe but am a bit nervous after the first BTooth driver Dell recommended was installed and it really messed things up - to the extent that in the end I had to go back to an earlier restore point.

I note that you recomend a later ? version of this BIOS update - do you think perhaps Dell thought A07 might have been more stable ?

By the way, haven't actually performed a BIOS update - is it just a case of executing this file.

Also if I do how do I see what version I am currently using and should I get hold of a copy in case it needs changing back.

The problem at the moment is I feel like "if it's not broken now" leave it !

It could lead to opening another can of worms !
