Bluetooth keyboard during startup
I have an Insprion 8500 and have installed MS wireless optical desktop. I am using the built-in BT capability and not using the MS supplied transceiver. Both KB and mouse work fine except when starting the laptop. During start-up when I am prompted to select the profile I wish to use neither the KB nor the mouse are recognized. I am running BIOS verison A06. Does the BIOS not recognize BT keyboards?
Once windows is started both work fine. However, this means that I need to have a alternative KB to allow me to startup. Should BT devices be recognized during startup?

KevinFarrell,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Bluetooth devices should be recognized because the BIOS is bluetooth enabled. I recommend updating or resetting this so that it will recognize your bluetooth device. Please look at the following articles:
Additional Microsoft Bluetooth articles.

I have the same issue. I don't think that it is a problem but more of the environment. BT will work in a windows environment but not a BIOS type screen environment.
Is the BT keyboard and mouse you have the new one 2004 from MS or the first one MS came out with in 2002. I'm interested to see how this new model is in terms of mouse battery life.

My BT set is older although I don't know if its 2002 vintage.
I have not run mine enough to assess battery life

Add my name to the list of MS Optical Desktop for Bluetooth users with start-up problems.
I have 3 of these BT keyboard's and mice on 3 new Dell Inspiron 600m, and they all misbehave in the same way.
Basically, they work fine until the LT is shutdown, then when you re-start, the keyboard and/or mouse won't work until after you attempt to “re-pair” them, And this cannot be done until after you have logged-in.
I have used both the in-built BT and the MS BT. On WinXP Sp1 the MS BT appeared to be a little more reliable, but on SP2 both are much the same issue.
There appears to be some anecdotal evidence that if you wait at the “Press CTRL-ALT-DEL” screen long enough, (and the machine doesn’t go into ‘Sleep’ while you’re waiting), that after about 3 or more minutes sometimes it works.
All this after buying 4 Dell 600m's with BT, and having 2 of these machine BT adapters changed twice (yes that four separate visits from a Dell engineer).
Seems like everything we try to do with BT is rubbish. The only thing that is reliable at the moment is the BT to our Sony Ericsson T610's for syncing Outlook.
Any thoughts on how we can make the keyboards (and mice) work from the get-go?
