exoticnomadik,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. Essentially, it is responsible for controlling the hardware and resources of the system.

Access to BIOS is gain during start of the system. I guess that your C600 allso can be accessed pressing F2 during start.

forgot to add that I am running XP pro with BIOS Revision A13 on my Latitude CPx when the BIOS hangs at about 80%.

Thanks for clearing up what BIOS means; this brings me closer to understanding how PC's work. I'm new at this. What do I do when BIOS hangs at bootup and the F2 or F12 buttons do nothing either. Why does this happen at all? I can't get into the system past this freeze.

Dell should have a clearer definition of this problem and offer another pathway to access Windows, one that really works!

I have a Latitude CPx H500GT with Windows XP pro and a 30gig drive.

Any suggestions to resolve my predicament?

In order to anderstand Your problem better. Du You get any beep sound during start? Does the LCD display something? What happens if You try to start with a BOOT or system diskett?

When it worked, yes, I did hear a slight beep and spinning sounds. The problem is both the F2 and F12 buttons freeze also when BIOS Revision A13 hangs on Win XP. I do not have a boot diskette. So what's next and how can I fix this?

How did You uppgrade Your BIOS the first time? It is much save to do this taking the system out of the dockning station/list and taken out anny PCI card and external compnnents such as keybord attached to it. You can also try the dignostic CD if You have one or do it all over again with the BIOS. This time donload a fresch copy of the BIOS and FOLLOW the intruction.

Unfortunately, I am not the original owner of this CPx, which came with Win XP pro. Apart from detaching any peripherals and cards, I have no way to get into the laptop, as the BIOS hangs at startup. No diagnostic CD and no boot disk in my possession, and it's too late for hindsight, I guess. Any other recommendations to get around this problem?

Thanks much,

Describe to me what's happens when You start Your Computer. You turn the Computer on and one or more beep are heard. Does the display show something. In other way what happens before Your Computer hangs?

After pressing the power button on the Latitude CPx I hear a couple of slight clicks like low beeps. The black monitor flickers and shows the big blue Dell logo and the BIOS progress bar. The F2 and F12 boot/setup text line appears on the top right corner, and the copyright line takes up the bottom of the screen. The white progress bar--with the name of the laptop and BIOS Revision A13 above and below it--starts slowly and jumps from 35% to 70%, pauses briefly, and then jumps to about 80% and hangs. That's it. Mostly, the actions are silent. I don't hear any major whirring at all, no drive spinning, etc.

To add: I was prompted by Win XP Pro to upgrade some software and I clicked "Yes," not certain what was being upgraded through this automatic process. I was connected to the Internet, of course. I don't know if the software upgrade was the new Windows XP pack, because it asked me to restart after completing the upgrade and I let it. That's when the hang became so permanent.

Wonder is there is a BIOS A13 conflict with any new drivers, etc that Windows may have upgraded...

Alright! Something went wrong during the upgrade. My best suggestion would be to undo the BIOS upgrade if it is possible to an older version. Then start Your system normally and have XP do whatever it´s necessary to make it understand the new configuration.

What happens there is that some HW gets new addresses or get new/upgrade function. Nothing to worry about. To do this use a start diskette to start Your system with. And then use an older BIOS version if possible. When this is done check if it is known problems with BIOS A13 upgrade for Your system together with XP. If You still want to upgrade to ver A13 use a FRESH copy of the code downloading it again. Make sure that it´s for Your system and follow the instructions. Let it take time. Good luck!
