buttons not responsive

Question

I have an Inspiron 8600 that does not get much use (still used, just less often).  I have had to rebuild the system years ago after a HD failure... so it is not an original install.  It is running XP, and I have had no real issues with it for a long time...but...   I simply realized today that the buttons do not work.  There is a set directly above the keyboard (volume up, down, mute) and the CD controls to the right of the keyboard (play, stop, RW, FF).  I am sure I am missing a driver or something, but I have tried looking through the dell sight and google, but coming up blank.  I can still adjust the volume on screen with the speaker icon, but I miss that quick access to mute I had before.  Anyone else experience this?  No other keyboard or touch pad issues... mouse (touchpad) buttons work fine.

Hi,                       If you are thinking that you missed a driver. ypu can go to the device manager to check if all the drivers are installed properly..... one effective troubleshooting step,is to try use similar keyboard to your comp. if same problem occur,there is a possibility that there is a software issue. if known good keyboard works. then you need to replace the keyboard......

Install the Quickset Utility Software for your notebook that should give you the proper functionality back.   pcgeek11
