C510 Memory and Screen

Hi, crucial uk quotes 1GB of memory can be installed!

http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Dell%2BLatitude&mfr=Dell&tabid=AM&model=Latitude+C510+Series&submit=Go

Are they lying????????

I know C610 can take that much - it's same hardware but with pentium instead of celeron.

Has anyone tried 1024mb ram setup? Does this explain why cpuid reports 1 memory slot of 512 MB (when in fact i have 2x256)?

Also my screen has a yellow line running vertically down it, what can I do to fix this?

Thank all!

Hi,

If you are buying that much memory, why not get a Pentium as well ? You will have more cache inside. The line on the screen means you will need to replace it. If you do replace the CPU, remember it is a different family P3 to the C600.

Hi, thanks for your reply

yes I was doing some research and then thought yes i'd better replace the processor considering it's the same motherboard. I wans't sure if I had the guts to open up this baby (without doing damage) I've had a look at the service manual. I guess I was worried most about the heatsink and any thermal xfer after I swap chips. But I supppose laptops are supposed to be heat tolerent

I found a cheap p3 1.13 GHz on ebay, should perform better than 1200 Mhz celeron, that would make 1gb memory easy.

The screen is expensive to replace, even ebay screens (not sure if it's cable/ribbon thing?) So I'll keep an eye out, but I've lived with it for 2 years now I can subconsciousy ignore it!

I'm looking forward to the increase in memory performance, had this c510 since 2002 and I know doubling memory would allow it to breathe better, not sure how much cpu will help?(1.08Ghz xp says)

I put a seagate 5400rpm 40g hard drive as well - that definitely helped . much more performance over 4200rpm standard drive (which i wiped and kept as extra storage as modular bay - i love modular bays - I can swap hard drives/ dvdrws with my other mates inspiron 8200 etc)

Anyway I'll give it a go, the 1.13 Ghz is SL5CK I hope it's compatible!
