It freezes when boot to normal XP, after the progress indication bar goes couple rounds.
That's usually a good indication that a device driver isn't loading properly. Is the BIOS up to date? (version A23 is the most recent one available) Have you tried a System Restore to a point prior to when the problem first occurred?
Also, if the Diags are reporting a problem with the fan, you're probably going to want to have that addressed as soon as possible, as those things don't run very well when the guts melt.
Um...why don't you just get a new battery? Perhaps you could borrow one from someone with a similar system, long enough to flash the BIOS. You're still going to want to get that fan problem corrected, though.
