computer getting very hot

I just purchased a dell latitude second hand. After it has been on for 10 - 15 minututes it starts to heat up and gets hotter and hotter - the heat seems to be comming from the right up side of the key board as well as the right side of the screen - IS THIS NORMAL??? the fan does not seem to be working?? but maybe I have not left it on long enough for it to kick in. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Laptops do have a habit of running hot, but when they are noticeably hot, almost too hot to touch, there is a problem. Excessive heat will eventually damage components on the system board, memory, your hard drive, etc, etc, etc. If your fan is not on, that is a problem. They are designed to come on at a certain temperature. Either 1) your fan just is plain bad, or 2) the thermal circuitry on the system board is not recognizing the heat and kicking te fan on. Download Dell's diagnostics for your model (by using your service tag). Load the diags and run them, mainly the fan and system board tests.

If the heat is coming from the right side and you have a Latitude c series laptop, that is the side where the processor is. It will get hot, but under normal conditions the fan will kick on and push the heat out of the exhaust vents.

A new fan is fairly inexpensive, but will require someone who knows what they are doing to replace it.   Good Luck!

This will be construed as a dumb question most likely, but I'm at the end of my patience trying to fix my laptop myself.....

What is a service tag? I bought my Lattitude rebuilt, and am new to these forums. Is this a code that will allow me to download patches?

The service tag and express service code help Dell identify your specific laptop and can usually be found on the bottom of your laptop. You can download patches without it but you'll have to know your specific model, with that in mind there are big differences between a C600 and a C640, so downloading and installing say a Bios for the wrong computer can have bad results.

The service tag is also tied into your warranty info, and is required for phone support.

I had the same problem. Go to www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html and download a free FANtastic windows program giving you full versatile fan control.
