Cooling fan gone wild
I (stupidly) tried to run i8kfan on my dell vostro 1510. Automatic mode caused the system to become very very slugish so I uninstalled it. Now the cooling fan always stays in whatever the last state that i8kfan told it to. The fan does not turn off while idleing nor does it go to full speed when being used. If I reload i8kfan and force the fan to full speed and then uninstall i8kfan, the fan stays on high. If I reload i8kfan and force the fan to off and then uninstall i8kfan, the fan stays off. It is as if the BIOS is not controlling any more at all. I tried to flash the bios but the utility tells me that my bios is up to date and exits without making any changes.
I have uninstalled and completely removed (I think) i8kfan from my system.
Help.

Have you tried to reset your bios? That may set it back to factory original and then you can re=flash from there but only if absolutely necessary.

Did you try to set I8kfangui to "Show Temperatures Only, No Fan Control" on the Initial page?

I am not sure what you mean by "reset". I did select the factory defaults setting in the bios but it did not help. I think all that does is change the available settings back to what they were at shipping but none of the settings are for cooling or fans.
I still cant flash it after the reset either.

Yes but it leaves the fan in what ever state it was in. I manual put the fan on max and then selected "Show temp Only...". The fan continued to blow at full speed even as I watched the CPU temperature fall to below 30. I tried hitting Fn-Z and that did not do anything either.

My latest move was to do a windows system restore to a point before I ever heard of i8kfan but that did not make any difference to the fan controls.
I really think I will need to reload my bios. Is there a way to "force" the bios software to flash the bios even though it is the same version?

Go into the BIOS and look for "Load Defaults"; should be in the Maintenance section. This will load the default BIOS values from the BIOS e-Prom to the NVRAM. The BIOS can usually not be corrupted except if there is a glitch during a BIOS update. The NVRAM contains the BIOS info, but can be modified/corrupted because it can be written to by the system. Removing the small button battery allows the data in NVRAM to be lost. Removing the battery is not trivial in a laptop. In either case, the NVRAM is rewritten with the correct BIOS data.

Well, although I can not explain it, The fans seem to have returned to BIOS control today. I did not try anything since the items listed earlier (other then suspending my notebook over night) but without flashing or reseting anything, the fan just started behaving properly this morning.
Thanks to all of you who made suggestions.
