cpu performance

whenever i run the task manager the cpu performance shows that its running at 100%...even when i have no applications running...what could be the problem

This could be background Applications, and it could be your System Idle Proccess. Screenshots would help in getting to the bottom of this.

I will do that...when I get home from work...

from what I can remember....the process that was using the most cpu under the processes tab...was svchost.exe...if i try to kill it...my computer automatically shuts down

Svchost is a normal process. I wouldn't expect it to bog down your computer. Have you tried virus scans and scans for spyware?

yes...thats what I thought to...but i checked the cpu usage on my desktop at work and the svchost.exe cpu usage is pretty much at 0 all the time...meanwhile the one on my laptop runs at like 80 or higher...I have run a spyware program...but I have yet to run a virus check....will let you guys know

just checked...no viruses....does anyone else have their svchost.exe taking up so much pc power

your motherboard may have gone awry....run dell diagnostics with the cd.

run Spybot and Adaware (can be found at download.com ) to see if this makes a difference.

It's most likely not a hardware error, and if it is I doubt that the diagnostics can pick it up (judging by what other people say about the diag's they don't work too great, and only pick up severe errors) although, it's not a bad idea, I just don't think that it would work.

I would tend to lean towards a

You may want to try a few things, the first being starting your computer in safe mode and seeing if the problem still exists. You may want to try a few registry cleaners, as well as stopping some of the programs that start automatically on boot (try using MSCONFIG or similar)

sounds more like a hardware problem to me. you could eliminate that possibility by running the dell diagnostics if you have a hardware problem they will find it.
