Cracked Display

I got my laptop in August 2005. I've been using for both work and personal use. This past Wednesday I hoticed a crack in my display. The crack is similar to ome you would get in your windshield if a stome hit it. I don't know what cased it in the first place. The crack seems to be speading

I think that I need to have the display replaced.

Do any of the Dell stores in the Pittsburgh area do repairs or must I send it back to Dell to have it repaired?

It would need to go back to Dell for a screen replacement. If you have a Complete Care insurance plan, it'll be covered. If you do not, it will be your repair expense, as a shattered screen won't be covered by the system warranty.

If you don't have Complete Care and the notebook is a budget model (1000, 1200, 1300, 2200, etc.) the cost of a new screen may be more than you want to spend - depending on the size and resolution, it could be as much as $500.

One more question...does this insurance have to be purchased with the computer?

Since those have a smaller screen, expect to pay $400 or so if you have to replace the panel with a new one.

Yes, or shortly thereafter (within the first 21 days of shipment).

Thank you for all of the information.

I do have one more question, what is the average time frame for such a repair? I'm concerned as I use this computer for work.

I will be replacing my monitor.

My husband is in the IT field and wanted me to ask if I have to return my hard drive as well?   He doesn't want to loose any network settings or anything.

Also, don any of the Dell stores the Pittsburgh, PA area do repairs or are they sticttly retail?
