Crazy processor Question for a novice user.

Hi all.

I purchased an inspiron 6000 with an Intel Pentium M 740 (1.73Ghz, 533FSB).

I recently was installing a few games on it, and ran across an odd issue. When installing a few of my games run "tests" to see if the computer can handle the game (heroes IV and what not).. when the test was ran the processor came back as a "Pentium III" something or other and that it "failed the test" .. ??! Mind you that it runs the games and everything just fine..

So my question is basically is the Pentium M a pentium 3? if So what is the difference.. or did I get completely ripped off? and for that matter is there a huge difference then (positive or negative to the pentium 4?...

P.s. when I run a DXDIAG the report says "pentium M" for processor.. but thought it couldn't be a fluke for multiple games to all report that I was running a P3. ..

I'm really confused.

Thanks for any help,
Bill

I think the problem lies with your game software as it has not been programmed to recognise the latest Pentium M laptop processors.

The truth is, the Pentium M has its roots in the PIII family.  Intel has hit a roadblock with the P4 line, namely heat.  You can't put a 135 watt processor into a laptop.  So somebody noticed that the PIII line ran like crazy with a big cache (I've seen tests on Tom's Hardware Guide that showed a 2GHz Pentium M approaching the performance level of the 3.2GHz P4 Extreme Edition) at a very low power draw.

The software you're trying to install may predate the Pentium M -- unless they have patches available, you may be out of luck.
