Crystal Audio Driver problem under Win 2000

Hi,

First to say, that I'm posting from Germany, so apologize my poor English. I hope that you recognize my translated error messages. I didnt find a German Dell Forum ...

I was using my laptop (Latitude C610) with the pre-installed Win 98 and by the time got all kind of problems except of audio problems. Then I formatted the HD and installed Win 2000. As I didnt have the Driver CD any more, I used the newest drivers from the Dell website (Chipset drivers too). During the installation of the audio drivers for Crystal CS4205 the process broke down with a failure concerning the "cwawdm.sys"-file. It said "The driver could not be loaded". So that made an unsuccessfull installation, I no sound device was installed (so I even couldn't try to play some audio).

I tried everything to solve the problem for hours. I disconnect every device (external Floppy, mouse, Network cable, modem) and deactivated the ports (com1, ...) in the bios. I also flashed the bios with the newest version. Then I read something about other drivers, that may work. So i tried the Intel AC 97 and the one from Avanche. Same failure.

The sound card must be working. It worked before under Win 98 and it works under Knoppix (Linux boot cd), too. Do you have any idea?

Thanks for help,
Philippe

Win2000 does not come with the latest directx

Download directx and install then install the current driver. All software should be installed as local Administrator.

Hi,

I followed the instructions you gave. I logged in as administrator in safe mode. I uninstalled the previous Crystal Audio controller in Device manager from the Sound, Video and Game controllers tab. I installed the Directx and then installed the driver. Everything seemed to go smoothly. I then restarted and I was presented with the same problem (to locate a file)

The file 'cwawdm.sys' on Crystal AC 9x WDM driver Disk is needed.

In Device manager there is the following:

+++ Other Devices
+--- Wireless card

+++ Sound, Video and Game controllers
+--- Audio codecs
+--- !Multimedia audio controller (there is a yellow exclamation mark beside this)
+--- Legacy Audio drivers
+--- Legacy video capture devices
+--- Media control devices
+--- Video codecs

Shouldnt I see the sound card listed under Other devices also.

,Barry
