D600 BIOS upgrade causes temp. problems.

I've got a Latitude D600 with 1.3Ghz PentiumM, 1024Mb Crucial RAM and a 80Gb 5400rpm hdd, I'm currently running BIOS A06.

I use the laptop primarily for work running Office and VMWare and it's fine, but like most others I also do some gaming. Playing Neverwinter Nights at 800x600 is ok and I waste many an hour fighting evil and doing good deads.

I recently decided to refresh the installation of XP SP1 on my Laptop so I proceeded to download the latest drivers from the Dell site. I also noticed that the BIOS has reached A11 so I downloaded this too. I Ghost'ed my old installation just in case and proceeded to install the new BIOS then rebuild XP with the new drivers.

Everything ran fine until I tried some gaming, after a while (between 10 - 30 minutes) of gaming the framerate dropped massively and became unplayable, upon exiting the game the properties box of my computer reported that the current processor speed was anything between 300 & 600mhz rather than the 1300mhz it's capable of. I also noticed that the bottom of the laptop, by the memory hatch, is REALLY hot, unbearably hot to the touch.

I installed the "Fan Control" program by C Diefer and this reports the CPU temp at about 51C but the RAM temp at 57 - 58C! This program appears unable to control the fan speeds so I have set it in observer mode to monitor temps.

I Ghost'ed this installation of XP, 80gb hdd in a laptop is real useful, and restored my previous XP installation including the old drivers. The problem remained.

I then downgraded the BIOS back to A06 and tried again, now not only is the game running fine for 3 hours+ but the maximum temps reported by "Fan Control" are much lower, around 5C lower for both the CPU and RAM temps.

I noticed in the BIOS notes something about adjusting the thermal reporting algorithyms... you sure your BIOS guys improved things??

Fishd,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

Thanks for calling this to our attention. I’ve not noticed this issue happening with other’s systems but I will keep an eye out for this.

I still have this problem. When will this issue be resolved? I have a D600 also. Everything works fine with the A06 BIOS, but when I try anything higher than A06, including the newest A14, I always have this issue where the processor goes down to the lowest speed after playing a game for about 10 minutes. This is unacceptable.

I am getting the exact same problem- anything newer than A06 causes games (specifically Warcraft 3 for me) to take up like 230 MB of ram after about 15 minutes. This makes everything unbearably slow. Hopefully this issue can be resolved soon.
