D600 keyboard does not work

This happened following installing xp
win 2000 was installed for work programs wiping out xp
I installed xp
on start up the (  bios updated to a16) line moves about 25% then a repeat buzz sounds until the enter key is pressed. Then I am taken to the screen that tells me to choose  XP or WIN2000. The keyboard does not work from that point on. A USB keyboard works fine.

running my finger accross the numbers row gives a buffer is full sound.

I have run the diagnostics tool and I am told that a key is stuck.   Dell tech support said to replace the keyboard. Same problem after replacing the keyboard. I have reinstalled all the drivers and utilities.
The pointer and touch pad are fine.

The volume control buttons have never worked

Mike,

Could be 2 things from what you described ... Memory if its a repetitive beep that you get Or if it is a keyboard prob looks like you need a systemboard change. It would help to look at your Lock lights (caps lock (A), Num Lock (9) and Scroll lock). If the first 2 are on or blinking at the time you hear the sound its def the memory.

But hardware sounds unlikely if this started right after you installed XP. Once you are in windows, you having any trouble? You have 2 operating systems on so it could be some resource lacking for either. But I am just guessing till you have some more details :-)

Thankyou for your help

The number lock is on until I get to the windows screen. It goes off itself or if I use a USB keyboard to turn it off.
Diagnostics give me the following error messages:

controller test passes

2C00:0421   stuck key    constant scan code

2C00:031B

2C00:021C   These last two tests fail as nothing on the keboard works.  I use the USB keyboard to exit the test

I also get the repeat beep/buzz if I press two number keys at the same time.  sound stops if I hit a function key
