I have had the system for a year and the bluetooth chip works fine for me.

maybe there is something wrong with the chip or the pins are loose?

go try installing windows sp2 and use the bluetooth feature from the windows control panel rather than dell's software.

I got a new Dell Latitude D600 and I' experiencing the same problem. I'm also using the latest Bluetooth driver from the support page.

I tried to set up a connection between the laptop and a Siemens S55 mobile phone. The phone was able to detect the laptop with its name and hardware id but the Bluetooth software on the laptop says 'no local device detected' (message in german, I don't know the exact english text). The hardware manager detects the Bluetooth card.

I don't know what to do. It seems that its a software problem of the Bluetooth software.

If anybody knows a solution please let me (us) know

After some try and error i was able to fix this problem:

I was using the drivers and software from the Dell support page in the archive R65891.exe. I deinstalled this software and used the one that was on the "Drivers and Utilities" CD. This archive was called R74397.exe. I had some small problems installing the driver (I had to enter the path manually) but the Bluetooth card now is running fine and I'm able to connect to my mobile phone.
