D600 USB controller and LCD quality.

Hi Everyone,

I am looking into potentially buying a D600 or D500.  I hope you can give me some comments.  After reading the posts/threads from this forum, I found that there are issues about D600.

Like member, lushmd mentioned http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=latit_general&message.id=34609

(1) Hot left palm rest
(2) Noisy A/C adapter
(3) Flimsy keyboard
(4) May be video display issue..

There are 2 more items I would like to clarify.  Would you please help me out?  I can find it in the "User Manual" or Service guide from Dell.

1.) I would like to find out who made the USB controller for D600.  Is it from Intel or VIA ?  Also, how bad is the Video display issue compare to other notebook?

2.) I have a HP notebook now.  Although the video card performance is poor (it is S3 Twister chip), the display quality is good.  The pictures are crisp and clear.  Comparing to my other friends one who as a D500 and the other has the Insprion 1100.  the Insprion 1100 is very very poor, very blurry.  My HP notebook LCD just as good if not better quality than the D500.  However, the D500 has better perfermance.

I have poor experience with VIA USB controller, there are some compatibility problems between my USB device and VIA USB controller.  However, it seems that the Intel USB controller works better.  So, if the D600 has VIA usb controller.  I may try to avoid it.

Would some of you provide me some input?

Thanks

Sincerely,

misa

From what I can tell, the USB controller is made by Intel.  On the display, I think it looks great.  Compared to my friends Inspiron 8200 the screen is brighter and better looking, but his also has the Mobility Radeon 9000.  My guess would be that the video should look as good as, if not better than that of your HP, as the D600 has a much better video card.  The D500 on the other hand uses shared memory like the 1100, so performance wouldn't be great, but I don't know how the display would look.

As for the other stuff:

1) Warm, yes, but it's never bothered me

2) Occasionally I can hear it if I'm in a silent room and put it within a foot of my face

3) It is a little flimsy, but I've gotten used to it

4) I think its great, but then again this is my first modern laptop

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your input.  Greatly appreciate your comment.

The flimsy keyboard is fine for me too.  I tested on my friend's D500.  It is film, but ok not a  nuisance.  In fact it may be good, because it seems it responses faster.

I also worry about the ATI display drivers.  I have poor experience with ATI board for desktop.  Their drivers always have problem.  I wonder if you experience any difficulty with your D600, in term of software compatibility.

Thanks
