D620 - Problems with device ID DEV_27D8

I've recently received a new Latitude D620 to prepare for deployment. Part of the deployment process is to put all hardware drivers which belong to the new hardware into the unattended installation we use for XPSP2. This has been a successful process for all devices but one...

The Intel 945 chipset drivers (both from Dell and Intel) come with inf files which seem to miss one a reference to one device, the one with the following identifying characteristics:
VEN_8086&DEV_27D8&SUBSYS_01C21028&REV_01\3&8&61AAA01&0&D8

I have no idea what it is, it seems to be some kind of bridge or whatnot. The i945 drivers which are available make reference to similar devices with slightly lower IDs (earlier versions), but not this one.

I prefer to have all hardware issues solved before I deploy laptops, so I'd be very grateful if someone could point me to a driver set (or updated inf files) which configure this particular device. I do assume it's possible to configure this device as Dell tests this stuff, no?

TIA

It appears that this is related to the SigmaTel STAC9200 High Definition Audio (Soft Audio).  You might want to make sure you're running BIOS A02 (04/11/06) and that you have audio driver version v.5.10.0.4823, A03 (04/12/06).  You didn't mention when you actually received the notebook, but given the recent release dates for both those driver versions, it sounds like there's a chance you might have the previous versions on there.

I couldn't find any direct references to the D620 in other reports related to ID DEV_27D8, but Dell is mentioned (another system model) along with some other manufacturers in reports regarding same.  There are anecdotal comments regarding the Direct X version on subject systems as well, so that might be worth looking into, if the updated drivers don't wind up being all that's necessary.

It appears that the chipset drivers were just updated for that model as well.  (04/30/06)

Thanks for the reply.

I've received the laptop last week, it's a brand new one. The first thing I always do when I receive new hardware is to grab all the latest drivers from the vendor's website, in the case Dell's. So I do have the latest driver (just checked). I didn't update the BIOS though, and I just checked, it's A01. I'll update to A02, and check whether the problem still exists. To be continued...

Okay, thanks for the information.

I made the problem disappear by doing the following:

1) Update to BIOS A02

2) Reinstall the audio drivers...and this is where it gets funky.

The Dell package for the audio drivers kick off the installation of a Microsoft hotfix, KB835221. After this installation was done I went through the device manager and found the following description for the offending PCI device: "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver". Lookup of the KB article indeed results in a hotfix pertaining to High Definition Audio and this UAA Bus stuff. This KB article is already superceeded by another, KB888111 which mentions driver version 1.0a. So it appears I've been looking wrongly all along. I should have been looking at Microsoft for the hardware driver for this particular device. Makes sense, eh? :)

Anyway, I don't know if the BIOS version makes much difference in this case, it's entirely possible that installing the (67MB!) hotfix would have done the trick. Who knows. At least I'm making progress now, thanks!

They've been surprising me regularly, since the release of WinXP.  Their driver update for the ESS audio on my C600 works better than anything else I've tried, and they really seem to be listening to the comments they've solicited via their Windows Feedback Panel.  If this is any indication of what Vista will be like, I'm encouraged.

I must say that I never really had to resort to Microsoft to find any hardware drivers. So this is a first for me! Either way, Vista will be a new adventure all in itself. But at least this D620 is "Windows Vista Capable". Too bad I'm not the intended user of these devices, it's a lovely laptop!

Anyway, I'm redeploying the thing now, including hotfix. With some luck this will be the last attempt before imaging!

Thanks for the head-up.

I have been having this problem also...
I integrated all d620 drivers into a slipstreamed winxpsp2 install.
modem and audio drivers wouldn't install.
it is weird that if you install the modem drivers from the .exe, that the audio drivers will install at the same time.  or vice versa.  has been my experience, at least.

i thought the chipset drivers were missing something

i tried integrating the above mentioned kb835221 into my xp install and it fails. i will try running it post os installation and see if it installs the above drivers.

goofy.  never seen anything like it.

Yes truly strange, the only way I can install the modem (and then the soundcard drivers) even with a fully integrated image is to run this .exe file... pretty strange.

Hoping for some new drivers that resolve this, third party or otherwise.

look for kb888111 from MS it is the updated UAA drivers.  you need to call them to get the file, or you can find it through a google search.  i was able to integrate kb888111 into my xpsp2 install, and the drivers on the modem and sound card work fine.

my os install still throws up a "found new hardware wizard" but if you ignore it, it goes away, and the install completes, and everything works. (apparently there may be a fix for that from MS)
