D630 shows only 1 cpu in task manager

I'm running XP SP3 on a d630 with t7800 dual core processor. Device manager shows two processors but task manager shows only one on the performance tab. Is this indicating that Windows is only using one of the processors? I strongly suspect this is the case because I also run cygwin and /proc/cpuinfo is only showing one cpu. If so how do I fix it?

This is a new machine but the HDD was ghosted from the one on my old d610 single cpu machine. This was done to avoid having to reinstalling and reconfigure probably 50 applications. If there's anyway to fix this other than wiping the HDD and starting from scratch I'd love to hear it.

TIA

This would be an operating system technical question, and yes because you ghosted the machine over instead of installing the OS fresh it has a single processor kernel installed on the machine. However, typically when you install the drivers for the motherboard it might enable. Check your BIOS and make sure you have both processors activated as some MB will allow you to have one core enabled and the other disabled for whatever reason.

After you install the chipset specific driver and install SP3 for XP (even though it was already done, do it anyway) it should show the multiprocessor mode in the task manager. Reinstalling SP3 might be the best choice, but check over in the software side to see if someone has a better suggestion for you.

The chipset drivers are found on the dell website, along the bottom there is a link for 'Support' and you want to click the one that says 'Drivers & Downloads'.

From there you can give them your service tag number and they will automatically locate the drivers for your unit, scroll until you find 'chipset drivers' and download them & install. If you don't have a service tag simply give them the model of your laptop and they will show you the options for that model.

Go to Microsoft.com and search Service Pack 3

You will want to find 'network installation' and download the SP3 installation file and execute it from your desktop and allow it to do all the work.

I'll double check the bios but I'm pretty sure both processors are active as this is a dual boot machine and in linux both processors are showing up in /proc/cpuinfo.

How do I determine which chipset driver to install? And now do I reinstall SP3. Windows UPdate thinks I already have it and doesn't offer to install it again.

I reinstalled the chipset driver (r153997.exe) from Dell's web site, and SP3 (WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe) from the Microsoft website. I'm still only showing one cpu in the task manager. Any other suggestions other than wiping everything out and reinstalling? If not I've got days of work reinstalling and configuring software.
