D810 Operating System Compatibility

My company has several of the Latitude D810 laptops, but the software that we need to run on there for maintenance requires Windows 98. I have noticed that the BIOS of a D810 only recognizes the 'autoexec.nt' and 'config.nt' files as bootable, and not the 'autoexec.bat' and 'config.sys'. Is there a version of BIOS that will work with our D810's to allow for a different operating system? Does the M70 support Windows 98/2000?

The BIOS has nothing to do with seeing/recognizing either autoexec or config.nt or .bat and or .sys. The BIOS is unaware of any of these files. It is the OS that sees them and reads them.

I suggest you let the IT department of your company deal with this software incompatibility and if there is NO IT department that you hire a professional to fix it.

I have not had any problems running older programs on Windows XP. Even ones designed specifically for Win98.

M70 would be the same.

I have the 'autoexec.bat' and 'config.sys' loaded on my C:\ Drive and run DOS Programs.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the BIOS was the culprit or if it was the way the hard drive was set up, but now I know. Unfortunately, there is no IT department in my location (Greenland) within my company, and the IT guys that are out here don't cover these laptops. The software that we use was actually made for Windows 95, but it installs and runs on XP. The problem comes after about 2 or 3 minutes, when the whole program locks up. This doesn't happen on our 98 system, so that's what I'm moving toward. Thanks a lot for your help.

You are in for a hassle if you try to install W98 on that very late system. Even a Latitude C840 was a problem that I finally gave up on; I was trying for a Dual boot of W2000 and W98SE with the W98SE going in first on a separate lower partition. The W98 drivers for much of the hardware were just not to be had, with Video Display Adapters being the most apparent; 640x480x16colors on a SXGA LCD screen is definitely not pretty. My advice is; stick with the W-XP the machine was made to use and try using the compatibility feature of W-XP as soon as you get that particular software installed. You find the installed line in the Start menu, right click it and then click Properties/Compatibility; set it for W98/ME, then click apply and OK. I have an old DOS based Bridge game which would also run under W95/98 that I installed on W-XP with that setting and it ran OK.
