let's just say the dells can be very picky on what memory is compatible with it.

You might also want to do a virus scan as decreased memory may also be the result of a virus.

well i use a program called freeram xp. it places a icon on my toolbar telling me how much ram is free and whenever needed i can have it free up any avalble ram.  you can get it at download.com and its freeware so what the heck

Dont rule out a faulty ram slot on the MB either.
