I've got a problem with my graphics card on my Dell inspiron 15r. i'm trying to play Grand Theft Auto IV, but i'm not able to because my laptop automaticly choses the Intel HD 4000 video card, i know there is a AMD radeon video card in this particulair device, but i'm not able to chose it, i've been appointed to press the Windows button and X, and then go to device manager and video card something, but it doesn't show there.. it only shows the Intel HD 4000 graphics card, please help me fix this.

Hi Bugra Kamer,

It seems that the drivers for AMD Radeon video card is not installed and it could be that it must be showing in the device manager under other devices. Re-installing the video driver for AMD might fix the issue. Could you also please attach a screenshot of the device manager with Display Adapters and Other Devices expanded? We can then identify where the problem is.

If you would like to try and install the drivers for AMD video card, then click here for Windows 8 or click here for Windows 7 to download it. Please uninstall the AMD drivers from the control panel first, restart the computer and then install the video driver again.

You can also try and update the BIOS on the computer and see if that helps. To download the BIOS for your laptop, click here . Below are the instructions on how to update the BIOS :

  • Disconnect any peripherals plugged in into the computer
  • Close all the programs that you are running
  • Make sure the charger is plugged in before initiating the BIOS update till it is complete. Do not unplug the charger while it is in process of updating.
  • Also make sure the battery is above 10% charge before you proceed to update the BIOS

Please reply with your findings.

When i press on that thing to switch graphics card for games, to put it on high setting, it shows me something with Hydragrid i am not knowledged of that, i dont know what to do.. i want to change GTA IV to high performance setting in there, but i cant because it doesnt show me any app, it shows me hydragrid settings or something.

August 10th, 2013 01:00

Some benchmark apps also tell me i'm using windows standard <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> .. and not the intel hd 4000 or AMD

Please help me with that too.

Ignore questions above, i've managed fix them myself, dont know how though, my AMD Radeon 7700M series, lags ALOT, GTA IV should be able to play at ultra resolution on this laptop, mine doesn't even allow me to play it on Lowest.

Please help me, also it gave me a error saying Out of video memory.

Hi Bugra Kamer,

First we need to check whether your game GTA IV has been assigned to work with AMD graphics or not. It could be possible that GTA IV is running with Intel graphics thus giving you the error message. Generally, the switching of an application (GTA IV) depends on the AMD Graphics. If it does not happen automatically, you can assign it manually, here's how:

  • Right Click on your desktop, and select Catalyst Control Center.
  • From the Power drop-down menu, select Switchable Graphics

  • Click Browse and navigate to select the program (GTA IV.exe file)

  • Click High Performance to select the graphics card (AMD Graphics) to use for that specific application.

Now run the game and see if it works fine. If not, then there is another thing we can do here. I researched online and found that this could also be a bug in the game which most of the players are also facing it. There is a workaround to that as well and I would like to share it with you. First, we need to make a commandline for the game. Its pretty simple. Here's how:

Create a text document called "Commandline" using notepad in your main GTA IV directory.

Paste this in to the document:

-norestrictions
-nomemrestrict
-percentvidmem 100
-memrestrict 681574400
-memrestrict 629145600
-noprecache
-novblank
-norestrictions
-nomemrestrict
-frameLimit 0
-width 1366
-height 768
-texturequality 2
-renderquality 4
-shadowdensity 1
-viewdistance 29
-detailquality 29
-percentvidmem 100
-availablevidmem 27.0
save the file and then run the game.
Hope this helps.

Yea but that's not the problem, i can switch to the other graphics card, but this is what happens as soon as i boot GTA IV on that graphics card.

((The 2 links are 2 pictures taken with my phone.))

http://puu.sh/45tLS.jpg

http://puu.sh/45tMu.jpg

So at the first picture, you can see my Dell 15r Inspiron, where i started GTA IV, and if you look good, you'll see green stuff on the screen, like those green dots... This only happens when i run the game with the AMD graphics card.

At Picture Two you see what happens 10 seconds after i stare at those green dots, because the game totally freezes and you cannot walk, even though those green dots are on the screen, they move a little bit, and then the game crashes saying something like out of memory or something, can someone please help me, i've also made that Text Document, and also named it Commandline, and i've also properly pasted those lines in there, but i still get this problem.

Hi Bugra Kamer,

Thank you for posting the pictures, they were really helpful. Appreciate that.

I do see the green dots on the first picture. Well, this could be a driver / game issue as well. Please try the following steps:

  • Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version? If not, please refer to the earlier post for the BIOS update
  • Uninstall the AMD graphics driver and then the Intel HD 4000 graphics from the Device Manager under Display Adapters (by right clicking and selecting Uninstall, also remove their software along)
  • Restart the computer and then first install the Intel HD 4000 Graphics driver and then the AMD graphics. Click here to download the Drivers.
  • Uninstall and Reinstall the GTA IV game.

Now run the game and please reply with your findings.

Hi Bugra Kamer,

Do you meant to take the video card out and put it back in on the motherboard? or Did you mean how to re-install the drivers for the video card?

if you physically want to remove the video card and put it back in then that would not be possible on this laptop as the Video Card is soldered on the motherboard. If you want to re-install the drivers then download both the Intel HD Graphics Driver and the AMD Driver from the link in the previous post and then install the Intel driver first followed with the AMD video driver.

Hi Bugra Kamer,

Sure I can assist you with the step by step instruction on installing the Drivers. Here is how:

  • ·         Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen.
  • ·         Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’.
  • ·         Click > sign next to ‘Display Adapters’.
  • ·         Right click the entry (both Intel and AMD driver one by one) listed under ‘Display Adapters’ and click ‘uninstall’.
  • ·         You may download and install the latest drivers from the link: http://dell.to/N6u34S
  • ·         On the link, enter the system Service Tag and click on ‘Continue’. Select operating system and it will display a list of available downloads.
  • ·         From the list select ‘Video’ option. Choose the graphics card for your system. Click ‘Download File’ and follow the on screen instructions.

Make sure you install the Intel Graphics HD 4000 driver first and then the AMD Driver listed under Video on the website. Pictures for the same are not available with us at this point of time. But if you follow the instructions above, it should be easy to install the drivers after you have downloaded them.

Hope this helps.
