Dell Duo

My wife purchased a Dell Inspiron Duo in November 2011 as she liked the idea of being able to use it as a tablet as well as conventional laptop.

It is generally adequate but is slow in operation. Windows 8 has been heralded for some time as the answer for tablet computers and my wife has been looking forward to upgrading to that system.

It is therefore very frustrating to find that Dell do not support Windows 8 on this machine and do not recommend upgrading. I can understand a computer running an old system such as XP might be difficult to upgrade but not to be able to upgrade a machine which is less than one year old seems to indicate a considerable lack of forethought on behalf of Dell.

I purchased a Duo August 2011. I wasn't impressed and it sat in a case a lot. Then I switched to Windows 8... well that and I shot myself in the leg, a new birthday tradition.. Win 8 makes a major improvement... speed and touch functionality make this a really versatile tool. It will take some time to get used to it... read the online guides and tips... there are lots. You will have to get the drivers for the accelerometers to enable the screen rotation. You can find them on mydellmini forums, they're actually on a Samsung site. I mentioned the leg injury because it afforded me the down time I've spent getting to know this improved Duo. I do not recommend this approach..waaay too painful. I installed 8 right over 7... good luck...

I thought the same thing!  Have had my Duo since February 2011.  I had many conversations (i.e. chats) with Dell Technical.  After getting the go ahead, I purchased Windows 8 from Microsoft direct (big discount too) and installed.  In my opinion, this has been the best solution for the touch part of this computer.  Takes some time to get used to all the bells and whistles, but it's great!  I suggest doing back up, and running direct from the website, Microsoft.  Good Luck, there will be some software/apps that are not compatible.  In my case, it was not many.  Hope your wife is as pleased as I am.
