Dell Latitude D630 Networking Problems
I have a Dell Latitude D630 Latitude laptop that has a problem connecting to the internet using my DSL modem. I was online with the computer today and suddenly the the second light on my DSL modem went out ( this indicates that there is no connection between the computer and the modem - this happens when the ethernet cable is disconnected from the computer ). Now the computer will not connect through my internet connection ( I tried the same connection with my desktop computer and it works fine ). I did not change any software or make any changes to the operating system before this happened. Is this an indication that my network card has failed? Thanks for any information on this problem...-

Try powering off your DSL modem and your laptop. Wait a minute. Turn on the DSL modem and let it completely boot-up. Then turn on the laptop.
It is sometimes possible for the Ethernet port to get zapped during a lightening storm, but doesn't sound like it what happened here.

Thanks for your reply! I actually had this problem with the laptop before ( I bought the unit from a company on ebay that had refurbished the unit ) when I first purchased the computer. I had to send the computer back to the company for repairs before I could use it with my DSL modem. I emailed the company after the computer was returned and asked what was wrong with it but they never got back to me with the information. The computer worked fine for about a year and now the problem has reoccurred ( the DSL modem acts like it is not properly connected to the computer when everthing is working fine ). What type of problem does this indicate? Should I get a new network card? Last time this happened I ran the network card's diagnostic software and it mentioned something about a shorted connection ( I'll have to get the diagnostic software and run it again ). Thanks for any advice....

If you have a suspect Ethernet port, I'd just go out and buy a PCMCIA Ethernet card or a USB Ethernet adapter. They're very inexpensive.
