Dell Mini 9 Shipment/Building Issues
So, on October 25th I ordered my Mini 9 from Dell Germany. The only option they have is linux or windows, and i went with windows. The rest of the computer is 16GB SSD, 1GB ram, 1.3MP cam, black.
Currently, my expected delivery got changed from November 27th to December 8th. That is now a 44 day wait to get a laptop that isn't customizable. What is wrong? Why is this taking so long to make? I've never had this issue before with Dell. Does anyone know anything about why this is taking so unbelievably long?
I've not gotten an email, an excuse, or anything from dell as of yet. I'm losing my faith in what was once a good company.
PS. It took me 30 min to figure out how to log into this website with my dell account, it kept giving me error messages and various other things. Also, the search engine for this website does not work very well at all. The more words I put into the search engine the more results I get, which is the opposite of what I'm trying to do, narrow my results. Therefore, I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but as I said, the search engine doesn't work for me.

No one here can answer - you'll need to call customer service. Netbooks in general are popular and the demand is exceeding the supply - I've been waiting to order one (though not from Dell) and the competition is likewise backordered.

I ordered the mini 9 as a promotion with the purchase of the xps 1530. Dell sent me an email that the 1530 shipped on 11/23 and was expected to be delivered on 11/26. The shipment actually didnt even get picked up until 11/26 and was delivered on 12/2.
The mini 9 was supposed to ship on 12/2, then I got an email that it was delayed until 12/11 and then today without warning they canceled the order for the mini 9 and the peripherals and software I ordered for the xps 1530 on Nov 16.
There is NO excuse for this. Dell used the mini 9 as an "incentive" to purchase the XPS 1530 and then cant deliver it. If there is such a high demand, they shouldn't use it as an incentive or "bonus" when they cant deliver it in the time originally promised at time of order, let alone 30 days.
I will be hard pressed to purchase anything from Dell again.

I ordered a mini 9 on DEC. 8 and it is being delivered on DEC. 22.It is in production now,possible earlier ship date.

I ordered mine on the 5th, it was scheduled to be in production till the 18th but is finished and in the process of delivery.

Dell unilaterally canceled my order after the second delay email indicating that it wouldnt ship unitl 12/18. They also canceled the order for all the peripherals to my XPS m1530 incl the messenger bag, mouse, software, and speakers.
I have been getting the run around for 4 days, they can not explain why they canceled my order, and they refuse to honor the prices they gave me on November 16. As a result of my experience, I will probably never order another Dell System.

Dell canceled the order I placed on Nov 16 on Dec 12, since it was delayed twice. After arguing with them for 5 days, they finally agreed to "reinstate" my order at the originally quoted price on Nov 16, and the only "offer" they made to make up for the month long delay was "free overnight shipping." Before this they "offered" to re-order it for me at the current price which didnt take into account the promotional price I got with the XPS M1530 I ordered on Nov 16. Still no one can explain to me why the order was canceled ( their lasted excuse was I called and canceled the order !!!!!!!! ). In addtion they canceled the remainder of my order which included the peripherals for the 1530. NO offer by Dell to make up for its mistake here either, except "free" overnight shipping. The messenger bag I ordered with the 1530 will now not be shipped until 1/6/09 almost 6 weeks after they shipped the laptop.
NOW, it is not expected to be shipped until 1/5/09. Pretty ridiculuous for a computer I ordered on Nov 16.
I am disgusted with customer service, customer care, the Dell Sales department and the "order reconciliation" deparment.
This is probably my last Dell purchase after this experience.

I'm considering myself lucky then, reading the problems many of you have had. I, too, ordered the Mini-9 as an add-on to the Studio 1537, on Nov. 29. Frankly, it was a target of opportunity at that price. I wasn't willing to pay full price. But my Mini-9 came first, shipped on Dec. 5 and in my hands by the morning of Dec. 9. The Studio 1537 didn't ship until Dec. 10 and showed up on the 12th.

I agree with you! I ordered the XPS One due to the promotion for the Mini 9 for $99.00 on 12/3. I am still waiting for the Mini 9. Dell has only offered me the option of cancelling the order or waiting. They even refused to reimburse me for the shipping. The only option they have given me is to change my order or cancel it. They are pretty emphatic about it too.
All told, the Mini 9 is actually costing me $494.56 with upgrades and $111.28 in accessories for a total of $605.84 just from Dell. Not to mention spending well over $2000 for the XPS One. I have also ordered accessories (such as 64GB SSD, 32GB SD, and 2GB Memory) that is hundreds more. The current reported ship date on their website for my order is 1/7/2009. However, Dell called me the other day and told me that the parts for the Mini 9 will not reach Dell until at least 1/14 which means that the order will not ship until afterwards. They have given me no less than SEVEN different ship dates so far. This is a pattern with Dell and the only way they will correct this is if they hear from consumers.
My suggestion is that you file a consumer complaint with the Better Business Bureau, The Federal Trade Commission, and your State Attorneey General.

As for me, I would have been happy to wait if Dell would have made some form of compensation such as free shipping and $50 gift card to spend on additional accessories. Unfortunately Dell said that they no longer believe in compensation as a resolution. So I will wait for my order, but in the meantime, the BBB, FTC, and my State Attorneey General have all contacted Dell regarding my order. It is important for others to do the same so that Dell does not repeat this.

I just received the mini 9 YESTERDAY! after the original order was placed on November 16, 2008. It should not take 45 days deliver a netbook.
After arguing with DELL for days and being transfered to a half dozen departments and supervisors ( not one who could speak proper english ) the best "offer" I was given my original configuration at the original price ( this after them telling me repeatedly that they could not even do that ) with "free" overnight shipping. I insisted upon some other compensation such as free upgrade to Windows XP from the Umbutu OS but they refused.
I was sent an email that the product shipped on Dec 26, 2008 and much like the XPS M1530 shipment, it didnt actually ship until Dec 29. Even then, it wasnt sent overnight, I still had to wait until Dec 31 for it to arrive, and had to make a special trip to my office to get it since I had taken the day off to spend with my family. After all this time, I can honestly say the product WAS NOT WORTH THE WAIT. It does not do half of what I had hoped it would, and probably should have saved the money and left the order canceled even though it was all due to a DELL screwup.
Dell obvioulsy tells people it ships the product days before it actually leaves the warehouse so they can start the clock rolling on warranties, incentives ( free week with Verizon wireless cards ) etc before they actually ship the products. My free week with verizon was over before I even got the XPS M1530 because they lied about shipping the laptop.
All I can say is beware when dealing with this company.
And Rich, you may want to consider canceling your order for this mini 9, it ain't all its cracked up to be for a professional.

I have several reasons for wanting a netbook and one main reason for continuing the order.
1) I have a number of components that I bought already for the Mini 9. This includes portable CD-ROM, memory, SSD drive, and an SD card. All but one of these can be used with another netbook. Unfortunately the SSD drive locks me into the Dell unless I return it.
2) Being that I work in the computer industry, I wanted to show off the netbook. Unfortunately I should have bought the Lenovo IdeaPad S10. My boss bought one and it is totally AWESOME! I will just choose to tell people that ask for my personal recommendation that my boss and I have netbooks and after comparison that they should go with the Lenovo instead.
3) I need a netbook. Given that the Mini 9 is two weeks away (supposedly) from shipping, I might as well wait. Besides, I did get a good deal with $250.00 off. Basically I got the top of the line model with 32GB SSD, 1GB RAM, Bluetooth, and 1.3 Megapixel camera. IMHO, it is even the best color "Cherry Red". Although, the IdeaPad S10 is much sweeter looking in "red"
As for compensation, Cin' over at NotebookReview.com bought a Mini 9 and was given free shipping and $50.00 compensation for his order troubles this holiday season. It was in the form of a credit to the Dell store for accessories.

He didn't have half of the trouble you and I had. In fact, Dell told me that they no longer give compensation as a means to resolve customer issues. Obviously someone is not telling the truth if some customers are getting compensation for their troubles and others are not. Dell can give compensation, but chooses not too. I would have been happy to wait with free shipping and a $50.00 Dell Store gift card. It would have certainly made it "right". Instead, Dell would rather be rude to their customers on the phone and will spend more time dealing with the complaints.
What gets me the most is that I am long time Dell customer. My two brothers, wife, father-in-law, and brother-in-law all have Dell computers because of me. In fact, my father-in-law is ordering a new laptop in a few weeks. He was looking at a Toshiba. I checked it out and it looked good for the price, so I told him "Go Ahead, Just Don't Get Dell".
Finally, Dell seems to not value the customer relationship with me. That is unfortunate because I used to value the relationship with them. I will be thinking of my customers and the relationship I want them to have with hardware vendors going forward and this experience will definitely weigh heavily on whether I recommend Dell going forward.

If you're looking for an alternative to the HP or Dell netbooks, consider the Samsung NC-10. It's the one to beat right now.

I wish I could just cancel, but I can't. I ordered several upgrade parts for the Mini 9 based on Dell representatives who promised that the Mini 9 would ship by 12/22. In fact, I ordered them overnight and have them sitting next to me now. This includes a 32GB SD card, 2GB Memory, 64GB solid state drive, and a portable DVD drive. The only issue is that the 64GB solid state drive is specific to the Dell Mini 9. Besides, the promotional deal I got is still better that I can get it anyplace else.
Funny thing, I forgot to order a portable DVD drive with my Dell Mini 9 and ordered that overnight from Dell on 12/19. Dell refused to credit me the shipping charges after the Mini 9 did not arrive even though their representives used the words "GUARANTEED" and "100% CONFIDENT" that the order will arrive on 12/23. Fortunately they messed up the shipping and DVD drive did not arrive overnight and were required to credit me the shipping charges. It still does NOT compensate for the overnight shipping charges from the other components I ordered from other vendors.
As for compensation, Dell can certainly compensate for the issues, but chooses not too. Here is an example of someone else that had Mini 9 order delays this holiday season and got compensation in the form of Free Shipping and $50 gift card for the Dell store to purchase accessories.

Dell does not realize that I recommend them on a regular basis both personally and professionally. On a personal level, my father-in-law, brother-in-law, two brothers, and wife all have Dell computers. In fact, my father-in-law is currently looking to upgrade his home networking to AT&T U-Verse with wireless networking. When he does he plans to get a laptop computer. He brought over a couple Toshiba configurations this Christmas. I basically confirmed that the laptop he wanted was good and told him to go ahead. Basically "anything but Dell" I said since I was concerned about customer service. I could not see him going with Dell and getting the runaround. He is going to buy the Toshiba laptop from Best Buy.
On a professional level, I recommend hardware vendors everyday. I try to stay neutral, but customers always asked me about my experiences with vendors. At the moment, HP is one of the best experiences out there right now. They really have come full circle and focus on customer services while Dell has done the exact opposite. I just wish HP's netbook was as good as the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 or the Dell Mini 9. It would have made things much easier this holiday season.

Well Dell has decided to delay my order yet again. This morning they communicated that the new estimated shipping date was 1/14/2009 with an estimated delivery date of 1/15/2009. Within a few hours of that communication they changed the date yet again. The new estimated shipping date is 1/16/2009 with a delivery date of 1/19/2009. I placed my order on 12/3/2009.
Why does it take 47 days to get an order from Dell?
