Thank you, now, I have heard that overcharging definitely kills a battery. I was wondering if that is the reason because i always have my ac adapter plugged into my system. The Dell Battery Meter has an option called DISABLE BATTERY CHARGING. now, when the battery reaches full, i manually check/click DISABLE BATTERY CHARGING, so that i avoid overcharging. when the battery goes down, i uncheck this so that the battery charges again. Is this necessary for a healthy long lasting battery? can i get any tool which automatically stops the battery from getting charged when it is FULL.

I have also read in some dell FAQs that dell lappies have inbuilt battery cut-off when full charge is achieved. is this true?

There is no way to overcharge a lithium ion battery by leaving it in the notebook - overcharging a lithium ion battery could lead to catastrophe, so the charge circuitry on the battery and in the notebook cuts off when the battery is full.

What CAN kill a battery in short order is heat - leaving the battery in the notebook while it's powered by AC constantly will significantly reduce its lifespan - not due to overcharging but rather, overheating.

hi, just recieved my new Dell battery and charger :) very happy with the service offered 10/10.

now, to preserve the battery life, should i disable charing when the battery is full and run it on power from the adapter? for this I usually go to dell battery meter and disable charging.

what are the other ways to ensure a long running battery?

If you're using the system on AC power exclusively, remove the battery from the system - that will prolong its life.  You  should run the system on battery  every couple of months and charge accordingly.
