Dell Studio 1555
Hi, I use my computer In the evening so thought with the coming months being darker I would invest in a 'Dell' backlit keyboard however, it doesn't work... surprise surprise!! I'm fully aware of bios, driver and software changes and the like, but what could be more infuriating than paying a lot of money for a laptop and not being able to just simply replace a keyboard and get it to work? These days with PnP it, you would think, it should be simple?
So now I've resorted to going on this site so that Dell maybe able to shed some light on what makes these systems so hard to configure, I have read previous posts on this and the web is bunged up with this simple request, so go on Dell answer me why we should pay all this money for your equipment and not be able to do the most simple of things like swap out a keyboard????
Keyboard is functional as in POST the keyboard lights up and goes off at Win 7 logo screen
Have tried so far too:-
Interrogate BIOS - BIOS is current at A013 (no keyboard controls)
Interrogate Windows 7 x64 - Mobile centre has no reference to backlit keyboard via quickset
Keyboard is definitely Dell so no incompatibility issues.

Hi Glenjis,
The Studio 1555 does provide an option to upgrade to a back-lit keyboard. Please check this video to ensure the keyboard and back-light cable are properly secured:
On the Studio 1555 the keyboard back light shortcut keys are Fn and F6.
Uninstall Dell Quick set from programs and features and install it again.
Please reply with the results.

Hi Satya,
I have done as suggested however nothing seems to be any different from my previous post, can you link me to the correct quickset version as I am installing the x64 from your support site, as I have Win7x64 installed (maybe this is wrong?) Quickset doesn't display options to change keyboard lighting settings in windows Mobile settings. As I said in my previous post "At P.O.S.T keyboard lights come on and extinguish when Win7 logo screen appears, full keyboard functionality exists throughout the session".
H E L P (please)
Best regards
Glenn

Hi Glenn,
Here is the link to install Quick Set for windows 7 64bit OS: http://dell.to/WnfQEv
Uninstall Quick set from programs and features and restart the system. Install it again from the above link. There are three lighting states that are available in back lit keyboards. Using the Fn and the F6 key you can toggle between these lighting states:
1. Full keyboard/touch pad brightness.
2. No lighting.
3. Half keyboard/touch pad brightness.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

Hi Glenn,
I have researched on this issue and found this thread which may be useful to you. Please read through all the posts before you make any changes. This again could be system specific as the steps mentioned are for Ambient sensor problem on back-lit keyboards.
en.community.dell.com/.../20097405.aspx
Try to boot the system in Safe mode and check if the keyboard lights turn On. (Start the system and hit the F8 key on the Dell logo screen page during start up. Select the option Safe mode)
Please reply with the results.

Hi,
I have tried the suggestions you had made in your last post and found that some of the facilties you have been requesting me to change do not exist on this laptop i.e. adaptive lighting etc? I did however, (when i saw the similarities) try all avenues with your advice, but i'm afraid none of it worked and am still left with no backlite. Safe mode did not present any more options to assist in sparking a 'lit' keyboard!!
thanks for the help thus far

Hi Glenn,
Sorry about the delay. Are you sure the back-lit keyboard you purchased is compatible with Studio 1555? Do you see the option in windows to turn On and turn Off keyboard back light.?
Open My Computer> C: drive> Dell> Drivers. Open the folder in which the Quick set application is installed. You should see the 'Backlit' option listed along with Quick set and the set up file. Check if the back light is turned On.

Hi Glenn,
I believe we have tried to isolate almost every point of failure with no success. We also cannot consider the keyboard DOA as it does lit up during POST. Lets try one more step:
1. Press and hold the key.
2. Press the key with the symbol noted with the blue dot. (keyboard light toggle)

Note: If your computer does not have the symbol noted with the blue dot above, the computer does not have this feature (the key may be in a different location on the keyboard)
If the issue is not resolved, please click on my user name and add me as a friend. Send the system service tag through private message only.
