Dell studio 1558 fan noise problem

Hello dell,

I wonder how many people has prob with dell studio 1558, just googled it and found most of them (all) having prolem with dell studio 1558 fan noise.

What happens in my case:

Fan noise was ok before few weeks ago, and it started 2-3 weeks back. aaftre every 20-30 sec fan noise inc suddenly, and during idle its noise is not normal/calm its bit different than usual one.

Fan noise is really annoying and it happens constantly not even a single minute it stops.

So in my case i think it may be  hardware prob of fan because i did not face this prob when i bought this system, may be fan will going to jam in near future?

This is my system config:

Studio 1558:

Processor: Core i3 processor M350 2.27 Ghz

RAM: 4GB

Gfx Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

HDD: 500 GB

Backlit keyboard

Slot loaded CD/DVD drive

P.S.: Recently My HDD and CD/DVD drive has prob SO dell replaced them both.

thanks,

manan

Today engineer came to my house and he replacced fan+heatsink. Thermal paste is already on it i suppose, he did not applied seprately.

Fan is running smootly.

Fault: Actually the outer part of heatsink is responsible for this when engineer took the part out and he touched outer part which is also visible (responsible) for air out is broken.

It was broken when engineer try to clean fan lol.

I also attached the image of broken part. Image is not of good quality but still visible

Can you describe the noise your fan was making? my fan cycle on high on and off every 30 seconds. It's been replace before, but it still does it even at idle!

Hi jottle515,

My fan noise started a month ago, It was not creating any noise when I bought the system, Thats why I was quite sure that it does not  software or BIOS issue.

My fan was making noise when ever I shift my system or you can say whenever I  change its position or tilt it and it also creating noise if my sysetm remain idle. But idle one is not that repetative it occures not that frequently as first case(tilt). But whenever I title my system its noise level goes high, everytime.

and its noise is somewhat like "tic-tic-tic" if you hear very carefully , ear just close enough to the fan. But due to fan speed it seems like "zzzzzzzzzzzzoooooooooooooooo"

Even I also record its noise, I think I deleted that file now. I will search it if I place its copy on my system and I will post it (if found) or  you can make small video how your system producing noise and post it here and may be I will help you is it similar to my case or not.

and yes Don't forgot STUDIO 1558 system has common issue of "fan noise". Its not the same case of every system as mine. As you said you already changed your fan but still its producing noise, So I think its the same problem that many STUDIO 1558 system have and it can only be resolved by updating BIOS. Hope Dell will update new BIOS regarding fan problem. Currently its A12 BIOS of this series of system.  The last update they did regarding LO JAck software not fan issue.

and whats the Customer care response in your case ?

There is a manufacturers defect with the fan. The hub of the fan (the center part which houses the motor and bearings) sticks out of the bottom of the fan about a millimeter. From the edge of that hub to the plastic casing of the computer is about 1 more millitmeter. So basically whenever the grate which covers the fan is touched in any way, the fan will rub up against the grate and make the buzzing sound. After time and with temperature changes, the grate and the fan can become closer together so that it doesn't require accidentally pressing it to cause the noise, it just buzzes on its own from rubbing together. Given the incredible amount of engineering thought which goes into designing these machines, it is immediately apparent to me that Dell engineers have purposefully designed these units to fail over time. The amount of work and knowledge that it takes to replace that fan is well beyond the capability of 99% of the users, so they either buy a new laptop or pay a repair shop hundreds of dollars to fix it. I had to disassemble mine last night because of the buzzing and after the 30 minutes it took me to get into the computer (I build desktop computers, so I have an idea what I'm doing), I discovered this manufacturer's defect. I would suggest that anyone who has the buzzing fan problem consider my post and consider contacting Dell for a replacement, regardless of warranty status, because what they have done is beyond a shadow of a doubt dishonest.

Hmmmm may be, but in my case prob was different I suppose as explained above.

Technically you are also right. This may be the problem, Becz its not the case with handsome laptops its widely problem with maximum users of Studio 1558 series laptop.

Thanks for sharing this.

I have the same problem with my Studio 1558 laptop.  Unfortunately it was 1 month out of warranty when problem started.  I called Dell Tech support and they told me they could send me a new fan, but I don't understand how the new fan will not rub up against the back of the laptop too?  Were you able to somehow correct the problem?

Hi wienelt, Actually my fan heatsink sound because of vibration the defective part whenever I bend the defective part strip (shown in image) struck with another strip or because of vibration of loose part sound comes out.

So once it was replaced with new one their was not loose strip, So its working good now.

Since then my DVD drive fails twice :( Bad quality and this time the guy who comes to my home for replacing my ODD he is not professional, He acts like noob seems he never got training regarding STUDIO 15 laptops. he even don't know which screw he has to open and which not. Even after assembling my  complete PC some screws left and he said  those are his screws. Thief :X :X

My wife's computer was having the same problem with noise. I tried to find the source of the problem without any luck. By chance, I discovered that the IDT High Definition driver was acting up. First in my sound mixer I was able to lower the IDt sound and the fan noise was gone. I wanted a more permanent solution so I found a new IDT driver at cnet and installed the new driver but the computer did not accept the install. Finally, I reinstalled the IDT driver at Dell Support and now the sound is working perfectly. My wife said I had to post this to let other people know of the solution I found. I hope it works for you and anyone else who reads this. jcarasso

Did the fan make a loud buzzing noise? Or did it cycle on and off constantly in your case?

Before the problem was solved, it sounded like the fan was going 100 miles an hour and was incredibly loud.  The only way to use the computer was to mute the sound, in which case no sound was heard.  If the sound was not muted, it sounded like a lawnmower.  Now I can not heard the fan.

I'm also same problem. The fan keeps running at abnormal speeds in idle conditions when there is no heavy applications working. Also the battery charging indicator starts flickering orange and white and the battery stops charging.
