Digital Audio S/PDIF through Port Replicator

Simple question, but cannot find the answer anywhere:

The description for the port replicator for the latitude D family mentions S/PDIF, however I cannot find any reference for the D620 notebook actually providing the signal.

So my question is: Is it possible to use S/PDIF digital sound when combining the D620 with the port replicator (without additional USB or PCI sound cards)?

All of the ports on the D-Dock or D-Port will work with the D620, You shouldn't need any other card.

Yea, I meant to say D420 but have D620 on my mind a lot lately. The systems don't have the ports because of space limitations, that's why they include them on the docks, in case someone needs them.

Ah...so I have a D620 with a D/Dock and see the S/PDIF connector on the dock.  Can you give me some idea of what sort of computer speakers I  can use with an S/PDIF connector?  I'd like something under $100 and see some of the home theater speakers that support S/PDIF run in the huindreds of dollars.  I was also thinking about adding a sound card to the D/Dock PCI slot but I guess after reading what the S/PDIF is for I do not think I need a sound card I just need some PC speakers that have a S/PDIF connector.  Is that correct?  There are several sound cards with good rebates right now, such as the soundblaster X-FI XtremeMusic and the Diamond Xtreme Sound 7.1 Dolby XS71.  Or, again, do you think that is a waste of money?  I would use it for music (CD playback), some movies (off the DVD player) and some gaming.

Any thoughts. comments, opinions is appreciated.

OK, thanks for the reply I appreciate it.

So...I take it to mean IF (that's a big if :-) I find speakers with S/PDIF input for under $100 I should jump on it.

One more question.  Does S/PDIF make a huge difference in sound compared to a setup I mentioned earlier where an external sound card is used in the d/dock PCI slot and connected to a decent set of amplified speakers?

I don't think you will find any speakers for under $100.00 that have a S/PDIF input. Your best bet would be to use the headphone out jack on the side of the dock to some powered computer speakers, you could probably fine a half way decent sounding set of speakers for fairly cheap. The old saying goes though, the most important component of any sound system is the speakers. Good speakers can make a cheap system sound OK but the best system on the planet can't make bad speakers sound good.
