Thanks Dennis. Interesting, it definitely suggests a software issue then. I thought for sure it was still a bios problem. Dell's first support step was having me install the latest Intel rapid storage technology 9.6 as I guess this update fixes a lot of weird issues. Haven't solved it yet.
I wonder if I have a setting in GPO that could be affecting this.
I had many issues with "hot docking" my E6400 when it was running Windows XP Pro. I have not had any issues since transitioning to Windows 7 Pro (on the same PC).
