Here is a link to the article at digitimes that says the chips are on schedule for a likely early may realease.

So the wait is not that far off.  My guess is Dell may launch a new laptop with the release of the "dothans"

They have had plenty of time to get one ready as the dothans were originally set to be shipped in January

the new Dothan will be available May 9th, not sure if they will be available for the general public at the same time. I have a feeling the Dell will release new laptops as well. I'd rather wait

Interesting articles at that digitimes link, Smackie, this one says Intel will merge desktop and notebook chips into a single Pentium M type of archtecture by 1997 and phase out the power-hungry Pentium 4.

I'm attending an Intel conference tomorrow. Something tells me they might actually have some inside information on the topic.  I choose not to rely on rumours and heresay.

Well; I'm back from the Intel conference and the official word is that 'Dothan' will be released sometime in June. 1.7, 1.8, and 2GHZ/2MB cache and twice as many transistors as its' predecessor (144 million). PCI Express will also be taking over desktops with DX9 integrated graphics (128MB).

...and, yes; as I've previously mentioned - the Dothan will fit in existing Centrino notebooks. Of course, all this is just the official word. For those of you who prefer to get your info from 3rd party sources or what a friend of a friend has told you they read 'somewhere'; then, please ignore this post.

Upon release of the Dothan chip, will Banias stopped being produced? Did they mention how long they thought it would take to hit mainstream notebook producers like Dell? Are major notebook producers already working together with Intel to start configuring their notebook laucnhes (or do they even normally do this)? Any clue on how much more expensive these will be than the Banias variants?

Sorry for the questions, but I want to buy a new laptop later this year and am gettin excited

Good question! Since there was no info on Banias, I expect they will still produce them; at least for a while. Dothan will certainly be more expensive at the 2GHZ level, but 1.7 and 8 shouldn't be much more because the chip is the same size and shouldn't cost any more to produce.

The launching of notebooks with 'Dothan' should be pretty close to the release of the chip. Of course, that will be up to the individual manufacturer. If you keep searching the web, there's bound to be news releases when the first 'Dothan' notebooks appear. I'm just guessing, but I would say; no later than early July - maybe mid June! Whatever the case - it will be worth waiting for (twice as many transistors as 'Banias' has to count for something).

Will Paul Ottelini be trustworthy enough for you, RandyB?

Cool re Dothans shipping.  I bet the new notebooks will be coming very soon too, the computer companies have no doubt received loads of tech information from Intel and were probably ready to roll last December, and have their motherboards all ready and waiting to plop in those new chips.

I think I want the lowest speed Dothan that has a 533 Mhz FS Bus.

Well then; I guess all the people who work for Intel should quit their jobs and go to work for McDonald's, because they obviously don't know what they're talking about.

People never cease to amaze me!

Hey! Did you know there's a new Inspiron coming out next week? Ya; I just read about it in the 'National Enquirer'.

I won't post to this thread again. I can't waste my time giving feedback from computer conferences to people who are too thick-headed to comprehend.

Maybe, only the people that you put your trust in to give you what you thought was good information should quit and go to McD's.

Except................................................................... McD's would want them to give out good information as well.

BTW - How is anyone on this thread to thick headed to comprehend what the Intel PRESIDENT said in that story.  It seemed pretty obvioius to me.

I guess when given the choice of believing the President of the company or "the conference tour" I would choose the prior

This ad for male "spokesmodels" to demo laptops may indicate that Intel will be promoting the new Dothan chips May 10.
