D/Port - Cannot determine power adapter type

I've got a 600m with a D/Port replicator. The system won't boot when in the d/port because it "can't determine the adapter type". The adapter is the 90W version and works correctly when plugged directly into the 600m. I've just upgraded to the latest bios (A09) but no joy.

Any ideas what it may be?.....is the adapter dead?.....why does it work on the 600m but not in the d/port???

Rick,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The problem is the amount of current provided to your docking station.  The docking station should have come with a 90 Watt adapter.  Your system came with a 65 Watt adapter, so the two power supplies are not interchangeable.

If you have misplaced the adapter, you may be able to purchase a replacement from Dell Spare Parts.  This department can be reached at 1-800-372-3355.

Rick,

It may be possible that the incorrect adapter was sent.  The model number contains nothing that I can use.  Can you please look for a part number or Dell SKU number on the adapter?  Please respond with this information.

The numbers are:

P/N 9T215

Output 19.5V @ 4.62A

AC Adapter   PA-10 Family

V1277

Thats about all the numbers except for the standard safety standards

rick & sam,

I looked up the part number listed in sam's post and found that it is a 90 W adapter.  You should have no problems running your system and charging the battery simultaneously.  You may want to update the BIOS with the latest on the Downloads tab (above).

sambhar,

Make sure that you are using a 90 W adapter.  The Inspiron 500M uses a 65W adapter.  The 65 W adapters will not supply enough power to the port replicator.

DELL-BobT

I am using a 90W adapter. I bought it specifically for the port replicator. This is what the adapter says:

AC Adapter PA-10 Family

Model: NADP-90 KB A

P/N: C2894

Input: 100-240V ~ 1,5A 50-60Hz

Output: 19,5V == 4.62A

90 Watts

When you put in a lower powered adapter it tells you that the adapter is not supplying enough power. However, with the 90 W adapter it says AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined.

Thanks,

Sam

DELL-BobT:

I have upgraded the BIOS to the latest version. I think it is A07 for Inspiron 500m. Yet I keep getting the error when I dock and boot up. It says cannot determine type of power adapter. Press F1 to shut down.

Should I try and upgrade the BIOS to the latest from Inspiron 600m?

Following up on my last post here are the messages:

With a 90W adapter (all part details given in my previous post)

Your system is docked, but the AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined.
Either undock or insert an appropriate adapter.
Strike the F1 key to shutdown.

With a 65W adapter

Your power adapter does not supply enough power to run the attached docking station.
Either undock or insert an appropriate adapter.
Strike the F1 key to shutdown.

Gentlemen, I do network support. One of my clients is having the exact same problem with his 600 / port replicator combination. He docks at home, no problem. He brings the laptop to work (docks to the replicator and pa10 that we supplied) and gets the "..can't determine" error.

BUT: he brought in his pa10 from home, plugs it in to the new replicator and it all works.

I guess I'll be looking for another pa10. Just to make sure, I'll try to match his existing one (different country of manufacture). I'm guessing either that the PA10 is bad, or else the laptop's bios is expecting a different setup.  And yes, we made sure the bios' docking toggle is set to "enabled"

Anyone have any other ideas???

Thanks.

Tom

Sam, the one that works is a PA10, 19.5V, 4.62A, Model PA-1900-02D, DP/N 9T215, made in China. The one that isn't recognised is a PA10, 19.5V, 4.62A, Model NADP-90KB  A,  PN C2984, made in Tailand.

If a PA10 is not a PA10, I guess we need to know that. I think the bios can only deal with one of them. If that's the case, then Dell needs to fix it. If I'm wrong, then they need to tell us how to proceed.

Moderators, can you shed some light on this???? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tom

Hmm.. That's the exact same "unrecognised" one that we have.

I'm not sure if this one came directly "from" Dell or not. If it's a bootleg or a counterfit unit, it's a real good copy.  More probable, however, is that one's an oem unit, and the other's a replacement part. But that's just my guess.

I sure wish one of the Dell folks would help us out on this.

We'll get to the bottom of it.

Thanks.

Tom

Tom:

I have the made in Thailand too. Here is the other stuff:

AC Adapter PA-10 Family, Model: NADP-90 KB A, P/N: C2894, Input: 100-240V ~ 1,5A 50-60Hz, Output: 19,5V == 4.62A, 90 Watts

Did you get the "Made in Thailand" adapter from Dell or did you buy it from other source like me?

Tom:

Thanks for the post. This is very interesting. I bought my PA-10 adapter on EBay. Maybe that's where the issue is. However, I do not know why the docking station is o fussy. All it should bother about is whether it is getting enough power. If you can get the specs (of the two adapters) from the person you are trying to help maybe we can figure out a pattern. I have supplied specs of my adapter a couple of posts back on this thread.

Dell support people don't seem to even understand the problem.

Thanks,

Sam
