Dual Monitors

I would like to doc my Inspiron notebook w/ the port replicator hooked up to 2 monitors. I would assume I would need to upgrade the video card in the port replicator to handle the 2 monitors. Has anyone done this?

cchester12,

There is no video card in the Inspiron port replicator. Inspiron systems will typically only have the ability to display on the LCD and one external CRT monitor.

You can connect one external monitor and use/see the notebook display as a second monitor. In this way, you have several options, one that I like is to use each monitor independent, you could have one program opened in one screen and another program in the other screen. To do this you have to have the lates display driver and set it up in the properties of the display.
I am sure there is a split connector that yu can buy to seee the same display in two monitors, it'll be some kind of Y connector or a A-B switch with a position for both.

Good Luck

Felix -

Could you please provide more details about how to accomplish using the external monitor connected to the APR as an independent screen? I've been playing with the controls and haven't been able to figure it out. Instructions I've been able to find make it sound like I need another video card. If so, can one be added to the APR?

Thanks!

If you have a CPx or 3700 or newer you can run the LCD and a monitor as separate displays. You can do this on Windows 98, ME, or XP. (Not 2000 unfortunately)

If you have XP (and a Mobility M or P) you need the IBM video driver below because the default XP driver can't do it

I'm running Windows 2000 on a 5000e with an external display connected through an APR. Is there any way to extend my desktop across both the laptop screen and the external display, or am I limited to the same content on both screens?

What I want to do is connect dual monitors to the APR. We are a trading shop and use bloomberg dual flat panels. All of the desktops have matrox video cards and I do not think the APR has the ability to handle dual panels. I was hoping to see if anyone had replaced the video card or found a docking station that would work. I am not sure about viewing the notebook screen and the attached monitor.

2000 only supports 1 display per card. You'll need XP to do what you want.

A C/dock seems more like what you will need. Then you can install a video card in the dock and display a separate image similar to what the Bloomberg LCDs can do. The cards that I have heard work in the C/Docks are the Hercules 4000XT, and the Radeon 7000 / Radeon VE (the radeon VE has 2 video output ports). I have personally tried an older STB Velocity 128 card and it worked.
