E 1705 graphics chip replacement?

Hi,

I have a E1705 laptop. The integraded Intel 945GM video chip apears to have failed. Is it possible to just pop out the old chip and insert a new intel 945gm chip? I was told here I cant just add a new ATI or Nvida graphics card to my laptop. A replacement motherboard is SOOOOOOOOOO expensive. This really blows, as I BABY this laptop, it never leaves the house, this failure should have never happened.

First time I've ever heard of integrated video failing.  What are the symptoms and what diagnostics have you performed?

No ,the integrated graphics are part of the motherboard, you can't just remove it.

And to add Nvidia or ATI you would have to buy a new motherboard with onboard graphics.

Thanks for the replies,

The  laptop display had been  flickering intermittenly, then I went to turn on the laptop one day and the Dell logo briefly displayed and the screen stayed black. Tthe laptop continues to boot up. I plugged in an external display and it does the same thing, the Dell logo briefly displays and thats it, the screen says black.

PLease let me know if maybe there is some other disgnosis I can get to before the Dell logo. Motherboards are so expensive.

 Thanks,

-Dez

Reseat the memory modules, and verify that the AC adapter is OK (LED on before you plug in the notebook end).  If it's not on, replace the adapter.

If it is OK, and you have tried reseating the memory, you need to replace the mainboard. It sounds like it is faulty.

Thanks for the great ideas. I forgot about the ram. It did not work. I even swapped posistions, tried one at a time etc. No luck. There is power to the adaptor (green LED is lite) and the battery shows a full charge. Great ideas though, thanks.

Im so disapointed, this laptop is my baby. Im stuck using an old Latitude cpx w/ a pent3 and Win ME and bad keys, as a back up till I can afford a mother board.

peace,
