E1505 Problem with installing MediaDirect

Hi -

I just reinstalled WinXP (MC 2005) on my E1505 using the Dell installation DVD. After loading all the latest drivers from the Dell Website, I tried to install MediaDirect form the Dell installation CD.

Note: I had a 1500 MB unformatted partition set aside for the destination location of MediaDirect. This was set up during the WinXP installation.

When I started the MediaDirect installation, it made it to 10%, and then halted with an error that it failed while copying files.

After that happened, my laptop couldn't boot into WinXP anymore, saying that my hal.dll file was missing.

Is this a known problem? If so, is there a solution?

Thanks!

Alan

The exact message from the MediaDirect installer is:

Installation stopped due to a failure when copying files. Please check your system and try again.

I found the problem - Although the installation instructions that came with the MediaDirect disk said to make a unallocated partition 1308 MB large for the MediaDirect installation, another Dell website said to make the partition 2048 MB (2.00 GB) large.

When I set my new unallocated partition to slightly more than 2.00 GB, the installation went fine (though it did seem to freeze at 10% again, it just took a while to set up).

After the installation was done, the MediaDirect partition had shrunk to 1.394 GB. The remaining space was unallocated, which I reclaimed back to my C: Drive.

MediaDirect works fine now!

Cheers!
