E1705 Display Issues
Hi,
I purchased the E1705 in the USA in August 2006. I study architecture and do graphics, so display quality is very important to me. I chose the True Life display, and aside from the distorted Internet Explorer I was completley and utterly impressed.
My laptop shipped with the "LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, WU, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, SAMSUNG, V2"
There is almost no light leakage, good contrast, and the color is even throughout the screen. No complaints!
However, last week I noticed a black slash shaped mark in the top right hand corner (5cm from the top, and 1 cm to the left). Because the resolution is so fine, I cant count the pixels, but I can draw the same thing in photoshop in 6 pixels.
As far as I can understand, as they are touching, I can get an LCD replacement. Only complication, I am in the UK on a semester abroad.
So the questions are:
1: What are the chances of getting a LCD in worse condition? Can I refuse a LCD that I beleive to be worse quality?
2: Is there any noticable difference between the different makers of LCDs?
3: Has anyone had any experience with transfering warranties? Can you do it multiple times?
4: The guy on web chat told me I needed to call tech support. Are they likely to make me run through a million diagnostics that will cost me a fortune?
I appreciate any feedback that anyone can give me!
Thanks

It sounds from your description like the display may somehow have been damaged. (Or could have been semi-defective and took a while to fail).
My TrueLife display is perfect. I believe it's a Seiko screen, but it doesn't matter too much. If anything, Samsung has a better reputation. (I believe Sharp is the #1 manufacturer of LCD screens in the world, or at least used to be, Samsung is definately up there.)

Anyway, after half an hour with Dell UK an engineer is coming out to replace it. Ill just keep my fingers crossed.
Overall dell support has been quite good, but the ques for the UK seem a lot longer than the USA! I never once got an available uk chat either!

The LG does not seem as bright. White is a bit more gray.
