Error code: 0x80070002; error code: 0146.

I have had this laptop for quiet a while now. It's an XPS M1530. It's a really good laptop and I don't wanna lose it. It has been more than two years that I left it alone because one day it just up and stopped working. So anyways long story short, I get error codes 0x80070002 and error code: 0146. I tried to install windows 7 from a "windows 7 upgrade" disc. When I bought it, it came with windows vista. Now, I understand that may be I should get windows installation disc instead of an upgrade disc, but I wanna know if that will really solve the problem. I don't know if it's a hard drive crash or if it's a fried hard drive. I was told that a fried hard drive need to be replaced. But a crashed hard drive, you can always recover by just installing a new operating system to it. I just really don't wanna have to buy another hard drive. I just wanna fix this and run this. Can anybody help please?

Hi mahiya,

Re-installing windows vista or windows 7 using the installation disc might not fix this issue.

Error code : 0146 indicates a possible hard drive failure. Try to re-seat the hard drive by using the system manual link given below:

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Run the Dell 32-bit diagnostics and select custom test on hard drive. Link for Dell 32-bit diagnostics:

support.dell.com/.../document

If the Dell 32-bit diagnostics come up with an error, the hard drive needs to be replaced.
