Error message
At start up an error message appears on black screen background:
A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
Doing it just cycles back.
I tried to tap F2 during reboot to get to utilities, but that is far as it can go and goes back to the error message. It doesn't go to safe mode restart.
I tried to reboot using the re-installation CD, but cannot continue when it cannot make the Windows/add-ins folder.
I'm trying to de-commission this almost 10-yr old Inspiron 2650. It just came early before I was able to save some files which I really need to recover.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The usual cause of this is a failing hard drive. IF you need to recover data, remove the drive, mount it in a 2.5" USB enclosure (needs to be EIDE - NOT SATA) and attach it to a working system by USB.

Hi,
Welcome to the Community.
First need to verify if the Hard drive is getting detected in the system .
turn the computer on start taping on F2 key on the keyboard . Bios screen will show up .
check the in the Main option check the 5Th option from the top it will be Hard Disk ,
check if you see an alphanumeric code next to it or it say NONE .
If you have the an alphanumeric code next to it then the hard drive is getting detected in the system.
seams like Hard drive failure in order to verify that need to run diagnostics on the computer .
please follow the steps mentioned in the links below.

If the test fails then need to Replace the Hardware accordingly .
If the test pass then need to re install the operating software .as the system cannot boot in safe mode .
If the in Bios you have NONE next to the Hard Disk then can try to reset the hard drive and restart the computer it may resolve the issue .

So, I was bale to copy all the files and wondering if the HDD is no longer usable...I noticed that one of it's features is the shock sensor. Can it be reset?
If not, then I have to replace it. Can I upgrade it to the Seagate model with 5400RPM and 80GB? Or are there other better upgrades?
