Hello. Either revert the laptop back to the operating system in which the audio worked correctly, or go to your model's support page and download and install the audio driver. You are probably using the Windows native audio driver right now but that driver does not support the external mic port so you have to manually install the driver meant for your laptop.

idt audio

If your laptop has IDT audio then it is an older model, so there probably is not a Win10 version of the audio driver. That means you might have to use a driver meant for an older Windows OS. In that case install the driver using compatibility mode.

I don't know of an Inspiron with that name. If you reply back with the full model name of the laptop I can give you a better answer. If you have one of the Inspiron 15R series then it is one of these 5 models:

SE 7520 (2010), N5110 (2011), 5520 & 5521 (2012), and 5537 (2013)

Windows says  error is "one or more audio service isn't running".

Audio Service has to be running to get any audio. Go to Start>Run and type "services.msc" (without quotes) into the Windows search box then hit the 'Enter' key (or click 'ok'). The Services window will appear. Scroll down until you find "Windows Audio" towards the bottom of the list. Check that it is enabled, set to automatic, and running. If it isn't, double click on it and change the Startup type to Automatic, then click Start, Apply, and OK.

Next remove all IDT driver files on the hard drive. Open  Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box). Find the audio driver under "Sound, video & game controllers" (it will be named IDT High Definition Audio Codec). Right click on it then click "uninstall" and select the option to delete the files. Restart the computer and pen Device3 Manager. If you still find IDT High Definition Audio Codec then repeat the process, and keep repeating it until you see "High Definition Audio Device" in the Device Manager. That is the name of the Windows native audio driver. At that point you can go on to the next step.

1. Next, download the IDT 6.10.0.6365 driver and save it to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive..
2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.
3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. (Should be "C:\DELL\DRIVERS\8H18M").
4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.
5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).
6. Find the "setup.exe" file.
7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.
8. Select the Properties.
9. Select the Compatibility tab.
10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.

If you do all of that and are still having problems then the Win10 installation is flawed. Your choices then are

> Revert back to the previous version of Windows in which the audio worked correctly

> OR revert back to the previous version of Windows then perform the "upgrade" to Win10 again and hope that this time there are no problems

> OR perform a clean install of Win10, then manually install the drivers that are missing due to the clean install. You can google to find out how to perform a clean install. If for some reason you have to have Win10 then a clean install might be the best way to go, but it can get hairy.

Audio service says "stopping" . After i was trying to reinstall drivers idt disappered from device manager. And drivers from dell (same version that you gived) give me hardware error. If only way is to reinstall windows i think i will need to do that.
