I have two monitors and speakers connected to the dock. Another co-worker has the same things connected to his dock and the fan doesn't run off and all all the time. He also has the same new Latitude E5520. The fan on my laptop comes on about every 2 or 3 minutes and run for about 1 minute.

Have you installed an updated graphics,or BIOS driver from dell that has a fix for overheating graphics??It basically runs the fans at 100% on and off all day to cool the chip???

Have the same machine and noticed the same "problem" as well! My fan is on almost all the time when connected to the dock. I do not have the exact RPM to report at this moment but the speed is low to med and, unfortunately quite noticeable. Fan gets louder when watching Netflix (in HD) for example.

I am monitoring the CPU temp (using small app called Core Temp) and it varies between 44 and 56 C. So I think the fan is doing its job in keeping the processor. cool. It is unfortunate, however, that you can hear it doing its job! The fact that the laptop is on a dock certainly does not seem to help. Is your dock warm to the touch when you un-dock your machine? Mine certainly is.

I am not sure if there is anything we can do. The fact that your friend is not complaining about the fan can give us some hope but before we contact Dell you should check with him whether his fan is totally off or just a constant, steady hum.
