Is the Firewire connection snug? That is, pull out the cable and reinsert it making sure it's perpendicular and a tight fit with your Firewire port. That's what happened to me with my Canon Elura! The 4-pin plug can get loose easily.
Notice you're planning to download your video from your camcorder to computer.
May we suggest you get a Sony GVD-1000 for viewing and downloading via Firewire to your files.
Primary reason is that sooner or later, the heads on your Sony will become unusable because of tape residue buildup. Using head cleaners are abrasive and may ruin those heads and cause expensive repairs later. MP.
