I tried the first step of hitting F2 whiel the Dell logo is visible and then I tried hitting F9 and/or Alt+F and nothing happened except the BIOS clock kept reverting to 00.00 1 Jan 2000. I was not prompted to except reverting to factory setting.
Am I doing anything wrong? I also seem to be getting a System 32 Runtime error occasionally, with I have never expereinced before with XP.
I have had major problems since I install the FlashBIOS update A11, my keyboard stopped responding properly and I kept recieving different system32 runtime error messages. I have just tried to do a Windows Repair using my Dell Win XP Pro CD, following the instructions given on this forum, but now I am in big trouble!
1. I recieved an error message saying someabout cannot find getIUMP.exe and couldn't find a file called MSDART.DLL. I looked on this forum on a friends PC (this one) and found a solution, and attempted to fix it.
2. Now though when I restart the PC, it states it is restarting repair windows, for a few inutes, then the screen goes black, the cursor and timer appears and then a message is displayed for a few seconds, which says something about system resources, and then it reboots and repeats this process contiunously!
I do not want to do a fresh install as there are files on my PC that are not backed up (I'm being punished enough!)
Does anyone know what I can do to finish the repair and get back into my PC and my files?
Hi Alex. It seems that your problems are escalating. I know from experience with my Inspiron how frustrating that can be. Your boot problems sound like it may be a RAM problem--if you have 512Mb, take out the SIMMS one at a time and see what happens. Additionally, when you unsuccessfully try to reset the BIOS, use alt + F9 at the Dell logo. I have reset my Inspiron BIOS from within the BIOS setting screens (F2) by using alt + F9.
Thanks for your help everyone, I did end up taking the PC to a local shop who took out the hard drive, put it in a slave and made an image of my files. For some reason it didn't copy the folder I wanted as it turned out it had some sort of protection on it, but after checking Microsofts Knowledge base, I found out how to change admin rights and I got it all back!
Phew, I'm not going through that again, my advice is, if your PCs fine don't update the BIOS!

alexgwinn,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
There is a solution to this posted in the Keyboard / Pointing Devices FAQ. Look at item #4.alexgwinn

Hi Bob-T,
I have just looked at the page you recommended and I can't see which article applies to me specifically.
As I don't know exactly what has caused it, I am sure which avenue to look down.
Could you please give me the URL of the specific topic you think is relavant.
Thanks again
Alex

Sorry Bob-T, I missed that you put item 4! Sorry its late here and I'm shattered!
I have actaully just updated my flashBios and it may well have occured then.
If I do reset my system, will it erase the hard drive, and should I then redownload all the latest updates, including the flash Bios again?
Thanks again for your help
Alex

I will do as soon as it happens again, but that could be anytime! I think it might have been 653, I am sure it was a 3-figure number.
What about the BIOS reset, what do you think I should do about that? Is a reboot going to be on the cards?
Cheers

Hi Bob,
This is the latest system32 runtime error I have recieved.
I have screenprinted it and posted here
I also seem to be getting some strange noises coming from my fans, I have no idea if this is related.
