Floppy Disk Drive

I ordered an Inspiron 5150 and it doesn't have a "floppy disk drive". Is this something that must be ordered separately, because I assumed it would be there?

Floppies are no longer standard on most notebooks - if you did not order one, you can call and do so.  If you did not get a 3-year warranty with the system, it would be a good time to order that as well.

Most likely you have a 64mb flash card reader coming in place of a floppy drive.  Soon the floppy drive will not be offered as an option on new computers because of the popularity of flash card readers.

64MB Flash card readers (or larger) serve two purposes. USB 2.0 compliant.

  1. Able to hold and transfer large amounts of data (about 40 times more than standard floppy) Speedy loading of huge files because of USB 2.0
  2. The ease of transferring large amounts of data in such a compact manner.

Once you get accustom to a flash card reader, the floppy drive will be a thing of the past.

As for bootable floppy disks; you can set your computer to boot from CDs instead. So now, floppy disks have finished their necessity and flash card readers are here to stay.
