Gliding touch pad /cursor
Help!
I cannot get anyone to answer my phone calls, or my messages to DELL. Hope there is bettre luck here.
My touchpad/mouse has started to behave badly and glides the cursor at will over the screen.
I have tried EVERYTHING in the mouse set up. I have checked for virus (none) and am at my wits end. I installed a new usb mouse which is slightly better but still glides.
Wots going on?
I want an engineer to come to me under my three year warranty with DELL. Nexy day on site service I was promised.

You need to give more information:
1. When did this first begin to occur? Did you install a specific program?
2. Create a restore point for the present, then restore your system to the day before the mouse began to fail? If it still gives problems you can just restore back to the present.
3. Do you have the latest software installed? Did you try unistalling, restarting, and re-installing the latest software?
4. Do you have two seperate mouse drivers installed on your system (1 for the integrated touchpad + 1 for the external mouse)?
*Note: Ranting about DELL on the forums will not solve your problem. Instead, try providing as much detailed information as possible.
Best of Luck!

Hi,
I have had this same problem on an Inspiron 3800 (going back 2 years) and Inspiron 4100 (my current machine). The pointer seems to take on a life of its own and simply move at will all over the screen and then stops again and then starts again and then stops again etc etc etc etc........ I remember trying to resolve this on the 3800 with Dell technical support and apart from installing the lastest BIOS and disabling the 'nipple' they had no other suggestions. Neither of these suggestions resolved the issue.
A forum on the Latitude on this website mentioned a similar problem where the pointer disappeared altogether. One users suggestion, was to choose a lower level of hardware acceleration. To do this (on W2K):
1/ Right Click on desktop, select 'Properties'
2/ Select the 'Settings' TAB.
3/ Press the 'Advanced' button.
4/ Select the 'Troubleshooting' TAB.
5/ Move the slider 1 point to the left. (assuming its at full hardware acceleration setting already)
6/ Press 'OK'
This appears to have worked for me so worth a try. Best of luck.
BTW : Come on DELL get this issue sorted. Its more than 2 years old now. I'll bet it dosn't happen on an HP laptop.

Thank you for this alternative option. I have tried it and it seems a little better, although it is still gliding sometimes. I haven't rebooted yet, which might make the difference. At the very least your kindly response has reminded me of an area of set up that I had frankly forgotte.
In the meantime, I did manage to get through to the DELL call cantre, where a charming lady in Bangalore, have me the number for on-site help in China. I tried the number but uess what! It was answered in Chinese! I now have to wait for my friendly neighbourhood management team, to come and translate for me.
It's a small and rather wonderful world, isn't it?
