Grainy Screen - Help

Just got my new Inspiron E1505 laptop. I went for most upgrades including an UltraSharp WSXGA with TrueLife. Usually I open such toys I end up a happy baby but this purchase seems to be a bad decision. Amongst various problems - the biggest one seems that of the screen. The screen is grainy! In fact a cheaper Toshiba that I bought for my father-in-law has excellent screen. So do some other makes at work. Can there be a problem with my the piece I received? or some settings that I can play around with?

Thanks in advance.

I had this problem too with an E1405 - found a reply on this board that worked for me:  Try changing your DPI to "normal" (96 DPI) in Control Panel / Display / Settings / Advanced - Good Luck!

Changing the DPI to 96 DPI usually helps for when the text looks bad. But try that first as suggested. But  I read that also you can go to your display setting and change form a normal screen to the clear type option if you choose to use 120 DPI. So if the 96 DPI change doesn't you then maybe the clear type will. Some say the 96 DPI clears it up but fonts are too small.  Here is a post to look at:

Thanks to both of you. I had already tried changing the DPI and play around with the 'Clear Type' effect but it still didn't help.

I then tried the 'registry' work around mentioned in one of the replies in the link that dbramlet gave me. It certainly helped to resolve another issue, which was 'fuzzy' images. Now the images seem to be clear. However the issue of the 'grainy' screen still remains. I think the best way to explain it is this - a photograph developed in a glossy format vs a photograph developed in a Matte finish. The Matte finish is grainy. It almost seems that the grains are actually in my eyes and gets very annoying.

[EDIT]: just to clarify more, if you remember how the large screen TVs were way back in the early 90's vs the Plasma/LCD of today. The older rear project tv had a grainy screen as compared to crisp and sharp displays of TV's today. The laptop I have has a display of those rear project tv and infact it doesn't seem to be very bright either!

Unless there is a way to fix this, I am planning to send this unit back.

Thanks.

I didn't read anyone mentioning this yet but if you have the display set to anything less than the native resolution the quality will suffer.

Also, here's a link to some tips on improving the display. Some of them were already mentioned. Tweaking the Display

Thanks Rodijeff - pretty much everything has been tried from your link, save for the ClearTypeToy, which I ran and I guess it improves the display a little bit but really doesn't address the 'grainy' issue of the screen. My display setting is actually set at the native resolution.

Bajji - no it hasn't. I had a chat with the tech support and they asked me to reinstall the latest drivers (link was provided) for the ATI video card. I did that and it didn't help. I will try one more chat with the tech support else this unit is going back.

Suharsh, I spoke to the Cust Serv guys and setup an exchange..They determined if 5 hours of tech support couldn't correct a 3 day old notebook, their display adapter is faulty...Now I am just waiting.. May be you should try it too.

Thanks Bajji - I am going to do the same. Did you call tech support or was it on chat?

Suharsh, The idea is to speak to Cust Service not tech support..if you have already spoken to the tech support and they give up, then they write it up on your ticket and they transfer to customer support. It is at this stage that you can let Cust service know that you can either return/exchange your m/c. I prefer to call up rather than chat.. but beware of the long hold times...

Thanks Bajji for the info. I will do the same. The only reason I like to chat is that I have a record, if things go awry. The other day Sears.com messed up with an order and then after a week I had to re-order, which was again messed up. So I called Sears customer service and told them 'what I thought about them' and that I was going to record the call, which of course they didn't allow! Seems customer service in the US is really going down. I have been here for almost two decades now and the scenario was different then. Oh well!

But thanks again and I will surely try that. Do let me know how the new one turns out to be. Likewise if I go for an exchange, I will do the same.

Hey that is good for you. Just had a talk with one of the reps, he wants me to try out a test. Let's see how it goes.
