graphics cards

hi. My father just gave me his inspiron 700m. I decided i wanted a game for it so i bought F.E.A.R.. It's a new game and i installed it and everything thinking that it'd be alright, but whenever i try to launch the game i just get a black screen, but i hear the sounds. So i'm thinking it might be an issue with the graphics card. I was wondering if there's anything i could do about this, like maybe figuring out a way to get a better one installed. I'm stubborn and persistant so i need to figure out how to make this work. thank you.

The 700m doesn't have a video card - it has integrated Intel video, that is part of the chipset. It cannot be upgraded.

The side of the game box should list the minimum system requirements to be able to play. Compare that to what you have in the i-700.

Fear has the highest video requirements of any current PC game, so don't except it to play on integrated graphics. If you're looking for games to play on your 700m, get one that's at least a year or two old and you'll probably be able to play it.

I would say return FEAR and get your money back, if you can.

Hi

I'm having the exact same problem with F.E.A.R on my 1150.  I understand that it has an intergrated video adapter as well.  If that cannot be updated, is there another video card compatible with that machine?

Thanks

And RD415, if you are looking for a graphic card, I suggest you buy a Nvidea geforce gcard. They're fairly the best gcards on the market.

Ok first of all. What kind of motherboard do you have? You may be able to add another graphic card to play your game.
In your motherboard, you might have a pci slot of agp slot which you can place a graphic card inside.
If your laptop is arround 2 and a half years or less, you are most likely to be able to have the most powerfull graphics card on the market today.
2)If your motherboard does have an AGP slot or PCI slot. When you install your new graphic card, you MUST disable your intergrated card.
Just a little advise, I have done this before.
I had a crapy built in via/s3 card, but i boought a new one and addapted it to my motherboard. Before you buy your new graphic card, you must know what slot your motherboard has. If it has an AGP slot, then you have to buy a graphic card that has an AGP interface. Same goes witht he PCI slot.

No problem RD415 , any thing i can do to help. If you want to figure out your information about your mother board. You can download SiSoftware Sandra lite. The program basically tells you all about your computer/laptop specs, and what parts you can have on your motherboard. ON the program it says main board, but the actual term is motherboard. You can also fix problems your laptop has using this software. Make sure you download the program from the right website. The full program costs money, while the lite version is free. There you can see if you have a AGC or PCI hook on your mainboard.
Or you can just open up your laptop and see for your self if you know what you are looking at.

Guys, you can NOT upgrade your video cards on these systems. There are only a small number of notebooks available with upgradeable GPUs, and then you can only order the replacement part from Dell. You can't just slap in any GPU-you can't even buy off the shelf GPUs for notebooks.

Omg, you can upgrade you laptop if your laptop has an extra PCI or AGC hook up. You just simply buy the v card with that plug in. Which the guy has a pci extra slot for a new video card.

Hi

Does an Ispiron 1150 even have an extra slot on its motherboard?  I was told that it didn't, but I have not opened it up to check it out.

Nope. You can only buy a video card from the company that makes the laptop, if they happen to have any more advanced cards available. That pretty much limits upgrades to high-end Dell laptops. You can't buy some generic video card and plug it in, unfortunatly.

No, he can't do that. You can't do that with laptops.

Actually thats with old laptops isnt it? Newer ones usually have a slot, either pci or agc.

If you do'nt know how an agc or pci slot looks like dont open up the computer. You can download  SiSoftware Sandra lite and it can tell you what type of extra slot it has. If your computer has an intergrated v card, and its old. It's most likely that it doesnt have either. Luckaly for me, i got some via\s3 intergrated, but i got an extra agc slot.

He has a mini-PCI slot that may or may not already be used. But that dosen't have anything to do with video. You CAN NOT upgrade the video on that system.
