GRAY LCD

Question

Have a studio 1747 (L701X) that needed the top cover replaced. Replaced it with no problems (I thought ). Put it together and BAM, the touchscreen doesn't work. Took apart and checked connections, seems ok, wiggled the wires, the touchscreen ribbon and the lcd ribbon and it worked for a couple of touches then nothing. Thinking I may have pinched or broke a wire somehow, I replaced the screen ribbon and the touchscreen ribbon, no touchscreen, wiggled the wires on the screen and it worked again for a bit. Thinking I may have not plugged in all the way I tried to unplug the connector on the motherboard side, and plug back in then a gray screen. This is were I screwed up, I never shut the computer off. MOTHERBOARD, INVERTER, SCREEN??? Any input would be MOST WELCOME. This is my grandsons computer and I'm in trouble

You have shorted out the video cable and perhaps destroyed the GPU. If the gpu is bad then you will get the same grey screen on the external monitor connection.

works on a external monitor. will try the other cable I have. if not do you think a hardware scan can do anything. thanks will keep posted

well I put the ribbon cable that was originally on and was working when I replaced it. did a system check on the dell site and came back with no issues GPU, MOBO, ect. I have since found that this laptop doesn't have a inverter, could the lcd be the one that died, the led backlight works but that it still have gray/white screen
